A friend invited me to his bathhouse,
A friend invited me to his bath
So he plunged me into painful torment.
But brought upon me terrible pain
كلامٌtalk يزيدincreases وماءand water يقلّdwindles
كلامٌ يزيد وماء يقلّ
فبئسso how wretched الصديقthe friend وبئسand how wretched الحميمthe hot water; also a close friend (pun)
فبئس الصديق وبئس الحميم
Talk increases, and water dwindles—
His chatter increased but the water diminished
What a wretched friend, and what wretched hot water!
What an awful friend, what an awful intimacy
