أقضِّيI spend فيهِin it بالأنكادِwith troubles وقتِيmy time
أقضِّي فيهِ بالأنكادِ وقتِي
Indeed, I have come to lead a strange life,
I have reached a strange age
In which I spend my time beset by troubles.
Where I spend my time grieving over the past
منof الأولادِthe children خمسٌfive حولَaround أمٍّa mother
من الأولادِ خمسٌ حولَ أمٍّ
فواso, oh! حرباهmy misery! منfrom خمسٍfive وستّand a lady (a pun on 'and six')
فوا حرباه من خمسٍ وستّ
Five children surround a mother—
Around a mother of five children
So alas, what misery from five and a lady!
Alas! Their wars range from five to six
