You opened for me a door of affection; never

had I known it to accept your neglect.

How fine the riddle, as an opener of

your affection toward me after your disregard!

You framed it as a riddle about something standing, submissive,

like a slave under the sway of your actions.

There is no defect in it—and oh, how often

Malik has returned it in his judgment!

But for me, in its middle, there is often

a branch—may God protect us from that!

I know neither poetry nor strophic verse, and from

your paired rhymes and proverbs I take dictation.

    فاعجب له في كلّ أحوالك

    You fear when you see it as an object of hope;

so marvel at it in all your circumstances.

What pleased me, by God, along with its versification,

was your familiar goodwill, O Malik.
