أتيت لمصر في كتاب شفاعة

إلى ولدٍ من والدٍ مورث العليا

I came to Egypt in a letter seeking intercession,

I came to Egypt with a letter of intercession,

to a son, from a father who inherited the highest distinction.

To a son, from a father who bequeathed lofty honor.

فيا لكتاب جاءَ من عند ميت

فيا لكتاب جاءَ من عند ميت

لحيٍّ فقال السعد لبَّيك يا يحيى

لحيٍّ فقال السعد لبَّيك يا يحيى

Oh, what a letter—come from one who is dead

And oh, what a letter, coming from a dead man

to one alive! Then Fortune said, “At your service, O Yaḥyā.”

To a living one! So good fortune said, "At your service, O Yahya!"
