وأرسى هضابَ المزنِ حولَ هضابه
May the outpouring rain water Ismāʿīl’s grave,
May gushing rain water Ismail's grave,
and may the rain clouds moor their hill-like masses around its mounds.
and anchor the hills of rainclouds around his hills.
وعاشَand may live لنَاfor us ملكٌa king نلوذُwe seek refuge بظلِّهin his shade

ونغفرُ ذنبَ الدهرِ بعد احْتِقابه
May there live for us a king beneath whose shade we shelter,
And may a king live on for us, in whose shade we seek refuge,
for whose sake we forgive Time its sin after it has incurred it.
and we forgive Time its sin after it has committed it.
فماfor ... is not السعدgood fortune إلاَّexcept لمحةٌa gleam فيin جبينهhis brow
فما السعد إلاَّ لمحةٌ في جبينه
وماand ... is not العزُّglory إلاَّexcept وقفةٌa moment's standing عندat بابِهhis door
وما العزُّ إلاَّ وقفةٌ عند بابِه
Good fortune is nothing but a gleam upon his brow,
For good fortune is but a gleam upon his brow,
and glory is nothing but a moment spent standing at his door.
and glory is but a moment's standing at his door.
