One whose tousled temple-locks stirred my anguish,
My nightingales have stirred up yearning in me,
and dragged the passion of their lovers in chains;
And dragged the passion of their lovers in chains.

وأينand where الثريَّاthe Pleiades منfrom يدthe hand المتناولthe one reaching
and apricots of a garden whose Pleiades shone forth—
And the apricot tree in the garden has blossomed,
but how far the Pleiades are from a reaching hand!
But where is the apricot, for one to pluck?

Yet yes—if, in hope, you clasp Ahmad's hand,
If the hand of Ahmed would clasp a man’s hand,
the hand reaching upward will clasp its Pleiades.
It would be like plucking her apricots.

A generous man: the rains' right hand complained of his left;
A generous man complained of his right hand to the clouds,
so what a life-giving rain you are, noble in character!
What a generous cloud you are, excellent in character.

His bounty is apportioned between generous gifts
She divides her talents among her excellent ladies,
bestowed on his praise-poets, and virtues.
Giving to those who praise her and to those with virtues.

His wondrous works teach them to compose praise;
She teaches them the craft of melodious poetry,
and oh, the minds he spurred on with precious gifts!
What minds she has stirred up with her wits!

His excellence surpassed the seven wandering planets;
Above the seven planets his virtue reigns supreme,
so may he ever surpass them in bounty and might!
Ceaselessly possessed of mighty influence.
