You lodged my heart in your grave.

There is no good in life after you.

After you, I have no home,

I think, unless it is there with you.

    My crimson tears flow

    when I remember your cheek.

And lead my heart through sorrow,

    when I remember your stature.

O seeker of tears, ask on!

For I cannot permit turning you away.

You struck me mortally, O my time,

as though I had been your target.

    فأجْهِدِ الآنَ جهدَك

    And what I feared has come to pass;

now exert yourself to the utmost.

I do not hope for your gentleness today,

nor do I fear your harshness.

    فاقدحْ بقلبيَ زندَك

    You closed the hand of my desire;

so strike your fire-stick against my heart.

And a cheek's dinar has departed—

how often I feared your assay of it!

Abd al-Rahim, it is against my will

that my eye should water your memory.

So I make sleep my portion

at night, and tears your portion.

You made my fortune wretched with bereavement,

my little son—O your grandfather's bereavement!

I weep, and he weeps, as though we were

    doves of lamentation after you.

    فكيفَ أحملُ فقدَك

    I could not bear estrangement;

how, then, can I bear losing you?

And I never imagined that I would

lament your lifeless remains and your turning away.

Alas for you, for a beauty

that once let your mantle fall.

Alas for you, for an intellect

that once made your necklace fair.

Alas for you, for a mouth

    that once surpassed your necklace.

I was not to forget kissing you when

    I felt death after you.

By God, I will not taste my bitter patience

after I have tasted your honey.

Fie upon my heart if it does not

    honor your love through grief.

The downfall of my house, for an age

that did not fulfill your tally of years.

You were the crescent moon of a horizon,

but the horizon opposed your good fortune.

And you were a shoot of a plant,

    but death withered your roses.

    لو عشت أحييت مجدَك

    And you were a river of seas;

had you lived, you would have given life to your glory.

And alas for the pens of learning,

bereft, O river, of your flow.

No wonder if all night my tears

    fulfill your promise by watering.

I have become alone in grief,

since in beauty I had ranked behind you.

    So, O my sorrow, rebel!

    And, O my consolation—your rebellion!

    And, O life-giving rain, lavish

your bounty on the one whose frame has withered.

And make your weeping over him

your dew, and your lamentation your thunder.

    فوفّ للحسنِ عهدَك

    For you are bound by a pledge;

so keep your pledge to beauty.

And, O Merciful One who called him,

keep your servant close through your mercy.
