A mouth upon which beauty has laid sugar;
A mouth that is filled with sweetness when it speaks
Speech is sweet upon it, even when repeated.
Though it repeats the same delightful speech

أنيthat I am قتيلٌone slain فيin هواهlove for him مصبرembalmed
He who sought my patient withdrawal from him has learned
She knows my patience for her is running out
That I am slain in love for him, embalmed.
Yet I'm her lovesick victim bearing the pain

وثناand praise تقيّTaqi (the pious one) الدّينal-Din (the faith) عنديto me أبهرmore dazzling
And rightly may I sing of him in dazzling love-verse;
I'm right to openly declare my love for her
Yet praise of Taqi al-Din is, to me, more dazzling.
And praise of virtue itself cannot compare

شهبٌbright stars بأفاقِin the horizons of السيادةeminence تزهرshine
Possessed of learning and merit—those two are what they are—
The one endowed with knowledge and merit
Stars shining across the horizons of eminence.
Like meteors blazing trails of greatness

They looked, and most deserving of regard was the one
They looked and saw none more deserving than he
Whose Taqi and Amin they had never seen equaled.
Who is trusted and faithful beyond any doubt

And though I complain to his wealth and standing
And if I complain of status or wealth
Of my limits, praise of both knows no bounds.
My praise cannot encompass all he possesses
طيرُthe bird الثناءِof praise محلقٌsoaring فيin أفقهhis sky
أبدَthroughout الزمانtime وأننيand indeed I لمقصرsurely fall short
The bird of praise soars in his sky
The birds of praise fly in his horizon
For all time—and I am surely falling short.
For all time while I fall short in my words
