تصبرbe patient فإنfor indeed الأجرthe reward أسنىmore exalted وأعظمand greater
ورأيكand your judgment أهدىa better guide للتيto that which هيit أقومmost upright
Be patient, for the reward is nobler and greater.
Have patience, for the reward is better and greater,
And your judgment is a surer guide to the most upright course.
And your view is more guided to that which is more upright.
وكمand how often جازwas permissible فرطexcess الحزنgrief للمرءfor a person لمdid not يفدbenefit
فماso what بالناour condition لاnot نستفيدwe benefit ونأثمand we incur sin
How often has excessive grief been permitted a man, yet availed him nothing!
And how often has excessive grief benefited a man? It did not avail,
Why, then, do we gain nothing and incur sin?
So why do we not benefit and commit sin?
وإنيَand indeed I عنfrom ندبlamenting الأحبَّةloved ones ساكتsilent
وإنand although كانَwas قلبيmy heart بالأسىwith sorrow يتكلمspeaks
And I remain silent, withholding laments for loved ones,
And though I am silent in lamenting loved ones,
Though my heart speaks in sorrow.
My heart speaks with sorrow.
أعزيكI console you فيfor غصنٍa branch ذوىwithered قبلbefore ماthat ارْتوىit drank its fill
وقامتand stood بهupon it وُرْقgray doves الثناpraise تترنَّمsinging melodiously
I console you for a branch that withered before it drank its fill,
I console you for a branch that withered before it was watered,
And on it the gray doves of praise stood singing.
And the leaves of intimacy stood up murmuring.
علىon مثلthe like of هذاthis عاهدmade a pact with الدهرTime أهلهits people
وصالunion وتفريقand separation يسرّbrings joy ويؤلمand causes pain
On such terms has Time made a pact with its people:
To the likes of this, fate has pledged its people -
Union and parting, bringing joy and pain.
Joining and separation that brings ease and pain.
وإنand if منعwere prevented الغيَّابthe absent ones أنto يقدمواthey come لناto us
فإناthen indeed we علىto غيابناour absent ones سوفwill نقدمwe come
And if the absent are barred from coming to us,
And if absence has prevented them from coming to us,
Then we shall surely come to those absent from us.
We will go forward to our own absence.
