For a loss like this, let our tearful eyes rain,

And loose the gray and red steeds in its arena.

We lost the sons of this world; then, when

The faces of our hopes turned, we lost the sons of the next.

At your loss, Ibrahim, our hearts have become

Ablaze, with no coolness in their scorching fire.

While you, in the gardens of bliss, are gladdened

With what you wore out your lifetime seeking.

You went unclothed and starved your heart; how blessed

Are abodes where you neither hunger nor go naked.

You had dwelt there an age, to the chagrin of the dwellings.

And you left it, after settling there, journeying by night

To the Garden of Refuge—glory to Him who bore you by night!

As though the lamps of darkness along its horizon

Were, at your loss, fires of yearning and remembrance.

Had bent their backs at parting from that breast.

You departed, leaving the dwellings and their people

Abandoned, lamenting hardships and sin's burden.

Who, then, will shoot the arrows of the night after you? They

Lie idle, neither fletched nor shaped.

And who will uphold abstinence from wealth and mankind's sons,

Slaves to desires, while through it you departed free?

Everyone possessed of wealth will learn tomorrow,

When the balance is set up, who must lament poverty.

God's peace be upon you, a wakeful man,

    Patient when no mortal could endure;

And a lean-flanked man, who tomorrow will race ahead

To a goal for whose sake the lean earn praise.

Does the spiritual guide know that our eyelids

Have scattered pearls over his distant form,

And that sorrow, like grief, has made a foray?

How many the slain, and how cheap the captives!

Ah, many a night he shielded from warfare

The domain of al-Sham, while heedless eyelids dozed.

    كذلك يحمي العابد الثغر والثغرا

    When the night companions laughed, he covered his mouth;

Thus the worshipper guards both mouth and frontier.

To God I commend a heart left at a loss after him,

Until it beholds the ranks of Resurrection and the Gathering.

Indeed, I would meet him with my breast constricted,

And he would open a way of ease for me and expand my breast.

As though from it I kissed a copious downpour.

So do not forget me in eternity, in the great supplication.

May rain water the earth in whose soil you have come to rest,

Though I used to seek rain by beholding you.

While others are looked to for payment when praised,

I hope for reward in my praises of you.
