يا سراةَ الشآمِ أشكو إليكم
أرضَa land قُلٍّwant; scarcity فلاحهاits prosperity للرجاءfor hope
أرضَ قُلٍّ فلاحها للرجاء
O nobles of Syria, I complain to you
O maidens of Syria, I complain to you
of a land of want, whose prosperity rests on hope.
Of a heart in anguish, its hopes like fields
وإذاand when قلَّتِdwindles الفِلاحةcultivation فيin الأرthe land (first part)
وإذا قلَّتِ الفِلاحة في الأر
ضِland (remaining part) فعتبُthen the reproach الفتىthe young man علىupon الرُّؤساءthe leaders
ضِ فعتبُ الفتى على الرُّؤساء
And when cultivation dwindles in the land,
When the harvest is poor on the land
a young man's reproach falls upon the leaders.
The youth blames the elders in command
