سكندريٌّan Alexandrian قلتI said لماwhen بداhe appeared
سكندريٌّ قلت لما بدا
فيamong صحبهhis companions كالبدرlike the full moon فيamong الأنجمthe stars
في صحبه كالبدر في الأنجم
To an Alexandrian I said, when he appeared
An Alexandrian, I said when he appeared
among his companions, like the full moon among the stars:
Among his friends like the full moon among stars
ياO مانعwithholder of الثغرthe lips وحقّand by the sanctity of الهوىlove
يا مانع الثغر وحقّ الهوى
إنيindeed I am لمشتاقٌsurely longing إلىfor اللّثمkissing
إني لمشتاقٌ إلى اللّثم
O you who withhold your lips—by love's sanctity,
O withholder of kisses, though love be right,
I am indeed longing for kisses.
Indeed, I yearn for a kiss!
