شهاب العلى والعلم في الشام يطلع
My hope had indeed veiled itself before it saw
My wish has been satisfied before it saw
Shihab, the meteor of eminence and learning, rising in al-Sham.
The shooting star of glory and knowledge rise in Damascus

وأقسم لا والله لا تتقنَّع
And when it saw you now, its face grew radiant;
But now that it has seen you, its face shines
And I swear—no, by God—it will not veil itself.
No, by God, it will not be satisfied
فماfor … is not الغيثrain إلاَّbut منfrom بنانكyour fingertips قطرةa drop
فما الغيث إلاَّ من بنانك قطرة
وماand … is not الغيثrain إلاَّbut منfrom يمينكyour right hand أصبعa finger
وما الغيث إلاَّ من يمينك أصبع
For rain is but a drop from your fingertips,
The rain is but a drop from your fingers
And rain is but a finger of your right hand.
The rain is but a finger from your right hand
