سلَّhe unsheathed أسيافthe swords of لحظهhis glance
سلَّ أسياف لحظه
فالْتقتهاand met them مقاتليmy vitals
فالْتقتها مقاتلي
He unsheathed the swords of his glance,
The swords of his glance unleashed
and my vitals met them.
Met by my warring eyes
باخلa miser لاnot يرقّfeels pity منof
باخل لا يرقّ من
دمعtears عينيmy eye لسائلfor a flowing tear
دمع عيني لسائل
A miser who feels no pity
My inward being cannot be softened
for a tear flowing from my eye.
By the tears of my petitioner
أناI مجنونmad with حبّهlove for him
أنا مجنون حبّه
ودموعيand my tears سلاسليmy chains
ودموعي سلاسلي
I am mad with love for him,
I am madly in love
and my tears are my chains.
And my tears are my shackles
ياO هلالاًcrescent moon يحلُّdwells منof
يا هلالاً يحلُّ من
كبدِيmy liver فيin منازلmansions
كبدِي في منازل
O crescent moon that dwells
Oh crescent that sets
in mansions within my liver!
From my heart in its dwellings
ذكرmay remember اللهGod بالنعwith bliss (word begins)
ذكر الله بالنع
يمcompletion of 'bliss' لياليthe nights of التَّواصلunion
يم ليالي التَّواصل
May God remember with bliss
Remembrance of God with blessing
the nights of union,
In the nights of connection
وسقىand may He water عهدهاtheir days وإنand even though
وسقى عهدها وإن
عهدتthey were known بالشقاfor misery ليfor me
عهدت بالشقا لي
and water their days, though
And she fulfilled her covenant though
they were known to bring me misery.
