ربَّmany a مليحhandsome man حسنfair صورتهhis appearance
ربَّ مليح حسن صورته
قالواthey said وقدand already أصبحhe had become ذاpossessing ذقنa beard (literally, a chin)
قالوا وقد أصبح ذا ذقن
Many a handsome man, fair of face—
The Lord is beautiful, his image fair
They said, when he had grown a beard:
They said, as his chin sprouted hair
لحيتهhis beard قطَّعتcut to pieces ذقنهhis chin
لحيته قطَّعت ذقنه
قلتُI said منfrom الأذنthe ear إلىto الأذنthe ear
قلتُ من الأذن إلى الأذن
"His beard has cut his chin to pieces."
His beard did mar his handsome chin
I said, "From ear to ear."
I said, from ear to ear a grin
