لأخرسُ لا تعزَى إليه المعارف

I pose you a riddle: what is sweet of tongue, though it is

I challenge you, though eloquent in speech, yet dumb,

indeed mute, with no knowledge ascribed to it?

To whom no wisdom can appeal,

يرى جالساً في الصدرِ ما دام كاملاً

يرى جالساً في الصدرِ ما دام كاملاً

فإن نقصوه فهو في الأرض طائف

فإن نقصوه فهو في الأرض طائف

It is seen seated in the place of honor as long as it remains whole;

Who sits ensconced within the heart, as long as perfect,

but if they diminish it, it wanders on the ground.

But lacking, roams the earth forlorn.
