To God we complain of crushing calamities.

They have bereaved us in our noblest hopes.

They struck us with a loss that, had they hurled Yadhbul into it,

Would have shaken its firmly rooted flanks.

So perdition to an age whose calamities never cease

Demanding their blood-debts from every seeker.

As though some of this age's nights, for their sake,

Had formed bonds of kinship with the Nasibis.

For though their vicissitudes have treated us ill,

Our character has nevertheless been refined through trials.

Oh, would that they had ransomed Husayn with whomever they wished

From the visitors, those walking to him and those riding.

Indeed, on the day of battle ranks they doubled the loss with his like,

And made it two with a lion of Lu'ayy ibn Ghalib.

A lion—you see white gifts in his palm,

And crimson blades between crimson claws.

His sharp swords are eyes in the faces of death,

And his bows occupy the place of eyebrows above them.

A youth who was like a rosy blush on glory's cheek,

And like a necklace in beauty upon the necks of high ranks.

So may glory's eye never close after his loss,

Nor an Indian sword smile in a wielder's hand.

    فيا لَيتَها محفورة في التّرائِبِ

    A cherished man lies beneath the dust in a pit;

Oh, would that it were dug among our breastbones!

Do not think him fearful of the grave's darkness:

Is his face not a monk's lamp?

May God water his resting place with pardon and mercy,

And grant him a veil on the day faults are laid bare.

What need has his well-watered resting place of rain,

When within it lies enfolded a sea of sweet draughts?

What need has his bier of the Daughters of the Bier?

The beautiful virtues it has borne suffice.

Heaven and earth announced his death, till for him there wept

The eyelids of morning clouds, with streaming tears.

The breasts of spears softened in grief for him,

And tall, neighing steeds yearned for him.

Distant strangers tore their collars for him

In anguish—to say nothing of his relatives' hearts.

    وضاقَتْ علينا واسِعاتُ المَذاهِبِ

    He died, and kindness, valor, and hope died with him;

And broad paths grew narrow for us.

No heart among his people's lions grieves for him

More bitterly than the lean, famished wolves.

So tell the sons of need: cease your night journeys.

Alas for the fruitless quest and the loss of desired aims!

I see the earth has hidden him, and so were eclipsed

At the sight of him, the moons of night and of pleasure grounds.

We shall weep for him as long as we live; if our tears run scant,

We shall swell them with our own melting hearts.

May no soul be spared anguish that has not melted

For him, nor any heart that has failed to throb.

Ask the earth about him: has his blade's luster rusted?

For I remember him as a blade with polished cutting edges.

And have the rainclouds of bounty dispersed from his fingertips?

For I knew them as ten rainclouds.

And have his noble qualities been buried in the soil?

For their native station lies among the stars.

After him, praise has no splendor, even if

We stole meanings from the front teeth of budding-breasted maidens.

When, after him, will the days quench our burning thirst,

When they have sunk the sea of gifts into the earth?

And how can we seek any rest from them,

When they have cast us into the harshest hardships?

A generous man whose palms, after his death, remained

Outstretched to meet desires, as was their custom.

Death gained mastery over him in seizing his soul,

Yet could not manage to close his finger-joints.

His loss has made the night eternal for us,

So we have found no dawn after him but a false one.

As though the horns of towering mountains, at his loss,

Had bound the lifetime of darkness to their forelocks for us.

Had God not completed the light of guidance for us

Through his father, we would have lived in pitch-black gloom:

The father of generosity and piety, Ali, brother of bounty,

Dhuka', sun of noble heights, full moon of the battalions' stars.

A generous man whose dwelling is in the land of al-Karkhatayn,

And whose kindness travels to every seeker.

May God preserve his life and prolong it,

And spare him ill outcomes in both worlds.

May his eyes never witness sorrow among loved ones,

Nor his ears hear the voices of mourning women.

May his sons and their sons never cease

To surround him in support on every side:

Lions—when the 'foxes' of their supple spears are fastened,

They hunt the lions of the chase as foxes are hunted.

Gardens watered with their milk by women of Fatima's line,

And the purest branches from the choicest roots.

Scions of wombs purified of defilement,

Blessed, noble ones born of noble women.

May their Lord protect him and them from evil,

And bring them to the loftiest wishes and aspirations.
