The pearl-bright star has fallen from the horizon of glory.

So ruin to a heart that does not melt with grief!

And woe to an eye whose tears do not overflow!

For an ocean among the kings of the sons of al-Mahdi has ebbed away.

Death's eclipse overtook him after his fullness,

So he faded, and the darkness of the grave stood between us and him.

He is gone; after him, Reason is stricken with grief at heart,

And Glory's breast, after him, is bereft of its heart.

The fates of death cut him off, though he was a limb of generosity,

So the hand of noble deeds was left without a forearm.

Lo, mourn Ibn Muhsin, O visitors!

For generosity's pillar has been brought down from the Kaaba of visitors.

And console the sons of the noble lords for his loss, for only

Through him was the Chapter of Praise raised from their renown.

    فحيّاً ومَيْتاً لم يزَلْ واريَ الزَّنْدِ

    He vanished, and so kindled yearning in hearts;

So, living and dead, his firestick never ceased to spark.

He is the son of God's Messenger, and the jewel that

Was formed from the light of prophethood and right guidance.

Indeed, he bestowed the world on the noblest of fathers,

And chose to come to his grandfather in Tuba.

The houris vie over him in love and jealousy,

And the youths envy him in the Garden of Eternity.

Had the Daughters of the Bier been at his bier's height,

They would have been among the full moon's noblest children.

So the king of the realm rightly laments parting from him,

For the finest of the sons of lions has vanished from his thicket.

And war's eye rightly weeps blood for him,

For in losing him, it has lost its Indian sword.

And Glory has the right to dig up the earth after him,

For in the dust it has lost the necklace's central jewel.

His fragrance spread through the earth, until it seemed that

Its perfume had been exchanged for rose-colored ambergris.

So, O his shrouds, he is glory enough for you,

For you serve as the sheath of Glory's blade.

And O his bier, by God, how did you bear him?

And O his grave, how did you close around Uhud?

A noble steed, he ran in the tracks of his fathers,

And his illustrious forefathers, those noble, unyielding lords.

And had misfortunes not held him back from the goal,

He would have attained, among their goals, the ultimate aim.

And if tearing the collar could bring back the departed,

It would be too little—and I have indeed torn my liver for them.

And if Death accepted ransom, I would ransom him,

But it will not yield the free man in exchange for the slave.

Sons of Glory, may death's arrows never strike you dead,

Nor may the days cripple your hand of bounty,

Nor may your eyes ever be tried by parting,

Nor may the anguish of distance burn your entrails.

And may your counsels and your hands ever endure,

Their lamps guiding, and their palms bestowing bounty.
