ينمُّ عليه الدّمعُ وهو جَحودُ
وينتحِلُand feigns السُّلوانَforgetfulness وهوthough he is وَدودُloving
وينتحِلُ السُّلوانَ وهو وَدودُ
Tears betray him, though he is in denial.
Tears flow on him yet he is ungrateful,
And he feigns forgetfulness, though he is full of love.
And he claims affection yet he is hostile.

ومنزلَ حُزْوى والمُرادُ زَرودُ
He mentions Dhuhl, though his love lies where Amir is,
He mentions the deserted abodes while love flourishes there,
and Huzwa's dwelling, though Zarud is what he means.
And the place of Huzwa while his goal is Zarud.

ومنهُ إلى ليلى الضّميرُ يعودُ
He declares his passion for Lubna, using double meanings,
He shows passion for Lubna yet his heart returns to Layla,
yet from this his hidden thought returns to Layla.
Deceiving, while to her his conscience goes back.

لعمْرُكَ في أشباهِها لَعَميدُ
He longs for the gazelles of al-Aqiq, though he,
He longs for the gentle doves yet verily,
by your life, is lovesick over their likenesses.
For their like he is a steadfast, old lover.

He sobers, then the east wind brings him a tale
The morning breeze comes to him with news
of the bān trees, serving him wine until he sways.
Of the doe who gives him pure drink and he swoons.

It tells him of his people and brings him to death,
It talks to him of his people so it kills him,
then breathes their fragrance upon him, and he revives.
And it wafts their scent to him so he returns to life.

I go forth at evening, with a soul that travels with the east wind;
My soul, I have a soul that walks with the morning breeze
it has departures and arrivals toward the sky.
With a breast soaring to the sky and roses.

is steadfast, save against coyness and dispersing separation.
Except love and separation where it is frozen.

And an eye—if rain clouds bore its water,
And an eye that if the clouds carried its water
the blaze of lightning would become quenched.
The flashing of lightning would end and be stillness.

When I behold a flash, the clouds of my tears are driven onward
When I sense lightning flash, tears etched by my sighs gush forth
by thunderclaps from my rising sighs.
Like thunder claps ascending and rumbling.

Why do the black eyelids disown my blood,
Why do the black eyelids deny my blood
when on the white cheeks are witnesses to it?
While in the white cheeks there is evidence?

Are they the fortunes of the sons of excellence?
Too weak for the descendants of perfect ancestry?

What ails us, that our eyes, with our very souls,
Why do our languid eyes generously love
are generous through love of miserly gazelles?
The reluctant, arrogant gazelles?

We wrongly name the red torrents of their tears
tears, though we know them to be livers.
While knowing well they are blue.

I am of those whose houses and tongues
and tongues bring benefit to those who ask.
Benefit those who ask.

We rule ravening lions, though it has come to pass
We disparage the most sinister of sinister women, yet if
that gazelles, sheltering in coverts, rule us.
The gazelles become like women they would disparage us.

Bright blades humble us when they are eyes,
The white gazelles – their eyes plead while they
and we shatter them against skulls when they are iron.
Break us with resolve as solid as iron.

Behold the bright full moons – they are faces
and black nights that lengthen, though they are curls,
And darkness of gentle nights – they are curled locks.

And spears of youth above them without warmth.

and collars of gold, ornaments to the eye,
Collars of gold are their beauty for the eyes
but fetters for the lover in passion's captivity:
And shackles of love binding the passionate.

there is passion in my heart—if the sea held some of it,
In my heart is such fervor that if grief contained some of it
its fish would become fuel for it.
The whales would be its fuel burning.

And on my cheek is rain—if it watered the garden,
And in my cheek is a wound – if it watered the garden it would
its daisies, still in their calyxes, would become roses.
Become meadows and bushes of roses.

So how many rubies does my weeping scatter,
mouths resembling pearls neatly strung!
Lips that mimic pearls but are more brilliant.

And kindle fire in me while they are cool.

Truly, neither the fire of youth is extinguished
and flowing tears find no stillness?
Nor do flowing tears cease.

By your life – before old age I did not know fate
could drive death toward me in the guise of rejection.
Would send me ruddy death yet aloof.

Before love, I did not know that fate would send
Nor did I know before love that destiny would
red deaths toward me in the guise of cheeks.
Send me red death while it has cheeks.

I never imagined that patience and composure
could let thrusts pierce me when they were graceful figures.
Would enable it to stab me while having a spear.

Nor did I count pomegranates among the fruit of spears,
Nor did I reckon the pomegranate of the Qana to be
until my eye saw them in the form of breasts.
What I saw with my eyes erect on its branch.

The gazelles avoid me with aversion in their eyes
are snares with which they hunt the proudest lions.
Which are traps that catch fierce lions.

scout the garden of hearts as pasture for death's herd.
To destroy hearts and trample souls.

Near to good, their nature calls him –
by which his fathers and forefathers were known.
Through it his fathers and ancestors were known.

A cloud by which souls are sheltered when it pours,
A cloud under which souls take shelter when it thunders
and skins sprout in the meadow of iron.
And upon the iron land roses bloom.

A valiant man who, when he meets the enemy alone,
A protector – if alone he meets an enemy
hunts the army's lions, though the army is numerous.
He hunts the fierce lions though they are many.

He protects honour from the shame of blame
and with bounty's sword he lays wealth waste.
And for wealth unsheathes the sword of attainment.

it is near at hand, while his glory is far beyond reach.

It is as if his great munificence makes

and his banners the wings of mighty victory.
And the wings of mighty triumph his flags.

The hearts are the place of his lofty glories – it is as if
when he shakes them toward the breasts, were grudges.
When he shakes them to the chests they are love knots.

and passed the threshold of puberty while still a newborn.
And attained the height of wisdom as a boy.

it crosses the limits of the unseen, and it is keen.
And goes beyond the limits of the unseen while intense.

He has a night that when the new moon disappears in it
becomes the pillar of success's dawn.
It becomes the morning of success erect and towering.

would their edges have glanced off armored breasts.
Impregnable chests of warriors would have no limits.

him to be keener, and so they bow in prostration.
That he is the absolute so they prostrate.

His warriors march and dawn breaks while they are foremost
beside him, while the broad-winged eagles become armies.
And dusk falls while they are soldiers.

Whose covenant to you is fixed and certain.

And destiny submitted to you though stubborn.

The radiant Basra is but a necklace
and you alone are the neck fit to wear it.
While you in it are the singular, befitting pearl.

Your fragrance perfumed its soil when you settled there,
Through your fragrance its land thrived since you settled it
so musk traveled forth from it in the form of dust.
So musk traveled from it while it was barren.
