nor my pledges uphold lofty ideals if I betray you.

I have gained nobility through them in lineage, and it suffices

for pride that I am a branch of their roots.

I am ascribed to them by descent, although

my belief is that I am one of their slaves.

O my master, O Messenger of God, take my hand:

I have borne a burden I have not managed to sustain.

I ask God's forgiveness for what I have committed against

myself—how ashamed I am before Him, how remorseful!

If you are not my intercessor at the Return, who

will protect me from God's punishment and retributions?

My master, hear the plea of one in need of your help

against what harms and what leads to accusations.

My bones will decay, yet within them, from devotion to you,

abides an enduring love and an unending yearning.

Your remembrance never passes without obliging me

to scatter tears and string praise within my words.

Upon you be God's blessings as long as

the souls of the pious grow drunk on the wine of their remembrance.
