Indeed, by love, were it not for bewitching eyelids,

our thoughts would never have become entangled in love.

And were it not for languorous eyes, never would

our wakeful eyes have watched the stars of darkness.

And but for mouths like strung necklaces,

our swift-falling tears would never have scattered.

We did not know how death befalls a youth,

yet its only face is radiant faces.

We are a people whose creed for the lover is this:

if he does not die in love, he dies an unbeliever.

Tearing our collars does not satisfy us in love,

unless our very gallbladders split open.

We met our deaths before we met their swords,

unsheathed from eyelids, though they are eyes.

Sharp blades terrify when white and deadly,

and we fear them when black and languid.

We dread death's spears when they are supple figures,

yet assail them when they are brown and interlocked.

We count maidens among our age's calamities,

and deadliest are their pupils and the hollows of their eyes.

We complain to them of time's encircling reversals,

yet greatest are their necklaces and bracelets.

We have the power to repel every calamity

that befalls us, except separation and estrangement.

The sting of vipers does us no harm,

if tresses do not join it in conspiring against us.

Was this age not content with what

its nights did to us, that tresses helped them too?

May God protect a clan in the sanctuary, where ever

    lair-dwelling lions embrace gazelle-cheeked beauties.

Its lions sway in shirts of iron,

and its wild-ox calves frolic in patterned silk.

It was guarded, with thrusts that pierce the mind, by

the figures of beauties and the swaying spears.

A dwelling where branches bear gold,

    and jewels sprout between lips.

And wrapping over the boughs and winding

around hips like silver are waist-wraps.

You would think the stars of night had been gathered over it

by a stringer's hands, or pearls strewn by a scatterer.

Its playgrounds are its halos, and its houses

the mansions of bright stars; its meeting places, the circles.

May rain greet the faces there which, when unveiled,

restore morning's light while night is murky.

Faces among which you see full moons wearing turbans,

and suns that darkness has veiled.

Beauty's water wandered between their cheeks,

then flowed from them, yet remained bewildered.

I would ransom them, that family whose

eyes and daggers match in their deadliness.

If a visitor's heart escapes their keen blades,

black, cleaving blades from their fair ones slay it.

They stationed doorkeepers of awe at their gates,

so no visitor but sleep came to them at night.

But for them, no reciter's voice would stir longing,

nor a night storyteller sway lovers' bodies.

And but for precious pearls upon their throats

and in their mouths, no poet could string verse well.

Beauty is nothing but a garden full of splendor,

and they are nothing but its roses and blossoms.

were it a secret, hearts could not contain it.

but far be it that a lover's secrets stay concealed!

    ويَخفى نَداهُ وهو في الخَلقِ ظاهرُ

    His excellence speaks of him while he is silent;

would tawny wine exist but for the presses?

Beside his deadly force, where are the mighty lions?

Thanks to my Lord, for His kindness encompassed you

with victory; enough for me that today you are triumphant.
