يا ناقل المصباحِ لا تمرر على

وجهِ الحبيبِ وقد تكحّل بالكرى

O bearer of the lamp, do not pass it over

O lamp bearer pass not by

the beloved's face, his eyes lined with slumber.

The face of my beloved though kohl-lined it be

أخشى خيال الهدبِ يجرح خدَّهُ

أخشى خيال الهدبِ يجرح خدَّهُ

فيقومُ من سِنة الكرى متذعّرا

فيقومُ من سِنة الكرى متذعّرا

I fear the shadow of his lashes may wound his cheek,

Lest the shadow of thy garb scratch his cheek

so he rises from sleep's drowse in fright.

And he awake from the swoon of kohl resentfully
