نَبِّهrouse وَليدَكَyour child مِنfrom صِباهُhis childishness بِزَجرَةٍwith a rebuke
فَلَرُبَّماfor perhaps أَغفىdozed off هُناكَthere ذَكاؤُهُhis intelligence
Rouse your child from his childishness with a rebuke,
Awaken your child in his youth with reprimand
for his intelligence may well have dozed off there.
Lest his brilliance become dulled therein
وَاِنهَرهُand scold him حَتّىuntil تَستَهِلَّbegin to flow دُموعُهُhis tears
فيupon وَجنَتَيهِhis two cheeks وَتَلتَظيand blaze أَحشاؤُهُhis insides
And scold him until his tears begin to flow
Make him weep until his tears moisten his cheeks
upon his cheeks and his insides blaze.
And saturate his innards
فَالسَيفِfor the sword لاnot تَذكوblaze بِكَفِّكَin your palm نارُهُits fire
حَتّىuntil يَسيلَflows بِصَفحَتَيهِalong its two sides ماؤُهُits water
For the sword’s fire does not blaze in your palm
Do not, with your palm, kindle the fire of the sword
until its water flows along both its sides.
Until its blade runs with water
