    O proud one, slow down.

It grieved me that you grew proud in ignorance.

Do you see, in what you see,

anything but youth that has departed,

    and passion that has subsided,

and a heart that has found solace?

Where are tears that flow for you?

Where is a side that burns?

Where is a soul offered up for you,

and ribs scorched for your sake?

What dominion there would have been, but for

a cheek-beard that arrived! Then that dominion fled

    and deserted you, leaving only

    a sorrow that never leaves.

And beauty folded itself away—if only

    beauty had shown kindness—if only!
