لاNo وَالَّذيby the One who تُجلىare dispelled الكُروبُthe sorrows
بِهِthrough Him وَتَنفَرِجُand are relieved الخُطوبthe calamities
No, by Him—sorrows are dispelled
No, by Him in whose face the clouds uncovered shine,
through Him, and calamities are relieved—
And by Him in whose hands the destinies entwine,
I have spent no night
يَنهَميstream down وَحشاًand a heart يَذوبmelts
I have spent no night but amid tears
I will not rest except where tears as wild beasts howl,
that stream down and a heart that melts.
And grief itself dissolves and melts to brine;
حَرّانَburning أَنتَشِقُI inhale النَسيمَthe breeze
وَنِعمَand how excellent مَسلاةُa solace الكُروبthe sorrows
Burning, I inhale the breeze,
Hot is the wind, but soothing is the pain of love,
and what a fine solace for sorrows it is!
And sweet the meeting after long decline.
لاتَلتَقيdo not meet الأَجفانُthe eyelids فيكَbecause of you
وَلاnor المَضاجِعُthe beds وَالجُنوبand the sides
My eyelids do not meet because of you,
In you my eyes shall close, my limbs shall find their place,
nor do my sides meet the beds.
And on your breast shall sink this head of mine;
أَبَداًalways أَحِنُّI yearn إِلَيكَfor you شَوقاًwith longing
كَالغَريبِlike a stranger مَعَat الغُروبsunset
Always I yearn for you with longing,
To you shall I be ever turning in desire,
like a stranger at sunset.
As turns the stranger to his native shrine,
وَأَقولُand I say لِلريحِto the wind الجَنوبِthe south wind
مَعَin الأَصيلِthe late afternoon صِليkeep up الهُبوبthe blowing
And I say to the south wind,
And say unto the South wind when it blows,
in the late afternoon, "Keep on blowing."
"With my beloved temper thou thy breath divine."
فَهَلِthen, have...? اِستَطَبتَyou found pleasant بِيَbecause of me الشَمالَthe north wind
كَماjust as اِستَطَبتُI found pleasant بِكَbecause of you الجَنوبthe south wind
Have you, then, found the north wind sweet because of me,
Shall I then seek the North as others sought the South?
as I have found the south wind sweet because of you?
Nay, as I sought the South, so seek the North in fine.
