أَلاbehold عَرَّسَcamped for the night الإِخوانُthe companions فيin ساحَةِthe courtyard of البِلىdecay
وَماand not رَفَعواthey raised غَيرَother than القُبورِthe graves قِباباpavilions
Lo, the companions have camped in the courtyard of decay,
and raised no pavilions but graves.
فَدَمعٌso tears كَماjust as سَحَّpoured down الغَمامُthe clouds وَلَوعَةٌand anguish
كَماjust as أَضرَمَتkindled ريحُthe wind of الشَمالِthe north شِهاباa flame
So tears flow as the clouds pour down, and anguish burns
like a flame kindled by the north wind.
إِذاwhen اِستَوقَفَتنيit made me stop فيamong الدِيارِthe dwellings عَشِيَّةًone evening
تَلَذَّذتُI delighted فيهاin them جيئَةًcoming وَذَهاباand going
When it made me pause among the dwellings one evening,
I delighted in coming and going there.
أَكُرُّI turn back بِطَرفيwith my gaze فيthrough مَعاهِدِthe haunts of فِتيَةٍyoung men
I was bereft of them
I turn my gaze back over the haunts of young men,
whom I lost, fair-faced and still young.
فَطالَso grew long وُقوفيmy standing بَينَbetween وَجدٍgrief وَزَفرَةٍand a sigh
أُناديI call to رُسوماًtraces of dwellings لاتُحيرُdo not return جَواباan answer
So I stood long between grief and a sigh,
calling to traces that return no answer.
وَأَمحوand I erase جَميلَgraceful الصَبرِpatience طَوراًat times بِعَبرَةٍwith a tear
أَخُطُّI write بِهاwith it فيon صَفحَتَيَّmy two cheeks كِتاباa script
And at times I blot out graceful patience with a tear,
with which I trace a script on both my cheeks.
وَقَدand already دَرَسَتhave worn away أَجسامُهُمtheir bodies وَدِيارُهُمand their dwellings
فَلَمso did not أَرَI see إِلّاexcept أَقبُراًgraves وَيَباباand desolation
And their bodies and their dwellings have worn away,
so I saw nothing but graves and desolation.
وَحَسبيَّand enough for me شَجواًsorrow أَنto أَرىI see الدارَthe dwelling بَلقَعاًbarren
خَلاءًempty وَأَشلاءَand the remains of الصَديقِthe friend تُراباdust
And it is sorrow enough for me to see the dwelling barren,
empty, and my friend's scattered remains turned to dust.
