كَفىit suffices حَزَناًsorrow أَنَّthat الدِيارَthe dwellings قَصِيَّةٌare distant
فَلاso no زَورَvisitor إِلّاexcept أَنthat يَكونَit be خَيالاa phantom
It is sorrow enough that the dwellings are far away,
and no visitor comes except as a phantom.
وَلاand no الرُسلُthe messengers إِلّاexcept لِلرِياحِfor the winds عَشِيَّةًat evening
تَكُرُّsweep back and forth جَنوباًas a south wind بَينَناbetween us وَشَمالاand a north wind
And there are no messengers but the winds at evening,
sweeping between us as south wind and north.
فَأَستَودِعُso I entrust الريحَthe wind الشَمالَthe northerly تَحِيَّةًa greeting
وَأَستَنشِقُand I breathe in الريحَthe wind الجَنوبَthe southerly سُؤالاin inquiry
So I entrust a greeting to the north wind,
and inhale the south wind, seeking news.
وَحَسبِيَand enough for me شَجواًas grief أَنَّthat ليI have فيكَfor you أَضلُعاًribs
حِراراًburning وَأَرداناًand sleeves عَلَيكَon your account خِضالاdrenched
And it is grief enough that, for you, my ribs
are burning, and my sleeves are drenched for you,
وَطَرفاًand an eye قَريحاًwounded صامَhas fasted فيكَfor you عَنِfrom الكَرىsleep
وَلاand no فِطرَbreaking of the fast إِلّاexcept أَنthat تَلوحَyou appear هِلالاas a crescent moon
and my wounded eye has fasted from sleep for you,
with no breaking of its fast until you appear, a crescent moon.
وَماand not الدَهرُtime إِلّاbut صَفحَةٌa face بِكَthrough you طَلقَةٌradiant
لَثَمتُI kissed بِهِupon it مِنfrom قَبلِbefore وَصلِكَunion with you خالاa mole
And time is but a face made radiant by you,
on which, before union with you, I kissed a mole.
فَماso whatever أَنسَهُI may forget it لاnot أَنسَshall I forget لَيلاًa night عَلىat الحِمىthe protected pasture
وَقَدand indeed رَقَّgrew tender وَضّاحاًradiant وَراقَand was enchanting جَمالاin beauty
Whatever I forget, I will not forget a night at the protected pasture,
so tender in its radiance, so enchanting in its beauty,
وَزارَand visited بِهِin it نَجمُthe star السُهىal-Suha قَمَرَthe moon الدُجىof darkness
وَباتاand the two spent the night بِحالِin the manner of الفَرقَدَينِthe Farqadayn وِصالاin union
when the star al-Suha visited the moon of night,
and they spent the night united like the Farqadayn.
إِذاwhenever ماهَداناdid guide us فيهِthrough it بارِقُa flash مَبسِمٍof a smiling mouth
أَجَنُّdarker دُجىًin darkness فَرعٌa tress فَخِرتُso I fell ضَلالاastray
Whenever a smiling mouth's lightning guided us through it,
a tress was darker still, and I fell astray.
وَليand I have نَظَرٌa gaze يَرتَدُّturns back فيكَfor you صَبابَةًin yearning
وَقَدand indeed فاضَoverflowed ماءُthe water الشَوقِof longing فيهِwithin it فَجالاthen swirled
And mine is a gaze that turns back, yearning for you,
with longing's waters overflowing within it and swirling.
فَجادَso may it drench الحِمىthe protected pasture غادٍsetting out at dawn مِنَfrom المُزنِthe rain clouds رائِحٌreturning at dusk
تَهاداهُpassed it among themselves أَعناقُthe necks الرِياحِof the winds كَلالاwearily
So may a rain cloud, setting out at dawn and returning at dusk, drench the protected pasture,
as the necks of winds pass it wearily along.
وَسارِيَةٍand many a night-traveling cloud دَهماءَblack حارَlost its way بِهاwithin it الدُجىthe darkness
فَشَبَّso kindled بِهاwithin it البَرقُthe lightning المُنيرُthe shining ذُبالاwicks
And in many a black night-cloud, darkness lost its way,
so the shining lightning kindled wicks within it.
فَلِلَّهِso, by God ماhow أَشجىplaintive الحَمامَةَthe dove غُدوَةًat dawn
هُناكَthere وَماand how أَندىdewy الأَراكَthe arak trees ظِلالاin shade
By God, how plaintive the dove at dawn
there, and how dewy the arak trees' shade!
وَقَدand indeed جاذَبَتtugged at ريحُthe wind الصَباthe east wind غُصنَthe branch النَقاof the sandhill
فَمادَso it swayed عَلىupon رِدفِthe haunch الكَثيبِof the dune وَمالاand leaned
And the east wind tugged at the sandhill's branch,
so it swayed on the dune's haunch and leaned.
وَأَيقَظَand awakened بَردُthe coolness الصُبحِof morning جَفنَthe eyelid عَرارِهِof its arar blossom
تَرَقرَقَtrembled دَمعُthe tears الطَلِّof dew فيهِwithin it فَسالاthen flowed
And morning's coolness woke the eyelid of its arar blossom;
dew's tears trembled within it, then flowed.
