فيin كُلِّevery نادٍgathering مِنكَfrom you رَوضُa garden of ثَناءِpraise
وَبِكُلِّand on every خَدٍّcheek فيكَfor you جَدوَلِa stream of ماءِwater
In every gathering, from you springs a garden of praise,
In every club of yours is a garden of praise,
and on every cheek, for you, a stream of water.
And in every cheek of yours is a stream of water.
وَلِكُلِّand for every شَخصٍperson هِزَّةُthe trembling of الغُصنِthe bough النَديdew-moistened
غِبَّafter البُكاءِweeping وَرِنَّةُand the plaintive cry of المُكاءِthe whistling bird
And each person has the trembling of a dew-moistened bough,
And for every person is the trembling of the slender branch,
after weeping, and the plaintive cry of the whistling bird.
The hidden weeping and the moaning of the dove.
يامَطلَعَO rising-place of الأَنوارِlights إِنَّindeed بِمُقلَتيin my eye
أَسَفاًgrief عَلَيكَfor you كَمَنشَإِlike the birthplace of الأَنواءِrainstorms
O rising-place of lights, within my eye
O rising of lights, in my eyes
is grief for you, like the birthplace of rainstorms.
Is sorrow for you like the origins of sighs.
وَكَفىand it is enough أَسىًas sorrow أَنthat لاسَفيرٌno messenger بَينَناbetween us
يَمشيtravels وَأَنand that لامَوعِدٌno appointed time لِلِقاءِfor meeting
It is sorrow enough that no messenger between us
And it is enough of sorrow that there is no ambassador between us
travels, and that no meeting is appointed.
Who walks, and that there is no tryst for the meeting.
فيمَwhat use is التَجَمُّلُadornment فيin زَمانٍa time بَزَّنيstripped me of
ثَوبَthe robe of الشَبابِyouth وَحيلَةَand the resourcefulness of النُبَلاءِthe noble
What use is finery in a time that has stripped me
So why the pretentiousness in a time that stripped me
of youth's robe and the resourcefulness of the noble?
Of the garb of youth and the wiles of nobles?
فَعَريتُso I was stripped bare إِلّاexcept مِنfor قِناعِa veil of كَآبَةٍgloom
وَعَطِلتُand I was left unadorned إِلّاexcept مِنfor حُلِيِّthe jewels of بُكاءِweeping
So I am naked, save for a veil of gloom,
I am bare except for the mask of gloominess
and unadorned, save for the jewels of weeping.
And adorned only with the jewels of weeping.
فَإِذاso whenever مَرَرتُI pass بِمَعهَدٍby a haunt لِشَبيبَةٍof youth
أَوor رَسمِthe traces of دارٍa house لِلصَديقِbelonging to the friend خَلاءِdeserted
Whenever I pass a haunt of youth,
So if I pass by a place for youths
or the traces of a friend's deserted house,
Or a picture of an empty house for a friend,
جالَتcoursed بِطَرفيthrough my eye لِلصَبابَةِfrom longing عَبرَةٌa tear
كَالغَيمِlike a cloud رَقَّgrew thin فَحالَthen intervened دونَbefore سَماءِthe sky
a tear of longing courses through my eye,
A tear flows in my eye for youth
like a cloud grown thin that veils the sky.
Like a cloud that melted and blocked the sky.
وَرَفَعتُand I raised كَفّيmy palm بَينَbetween طَرفٍan eye خاشِعٍhumbled
تَندىgrow moist مَآقيهِits inner corners وَبَينَand between دُعاءِa prayer
And I raised my palm between a humbled eye
And I raised my palm between a humble glance
whose inner corners grow moist, and a prayer.
With dewy lashes, and a prayer.
وَبَسَطتُand I laid out فيon الغَبراءِthe dust-gray earth خَدّيmy cheek ذِلَّةًin humility
I seek to bring down الرُحمىmercy مِنَfrom الخَضراءِthe green sky
And I laid my cheek on the dust-gray earth in humility,
And I placed my cheek humbly in the dust
seeking to draw mercy down from the green sky,
To summon mercy from the greens.

writhing in pain at the death of a lord
Swaying in pain for the death of a master
who had led the field in the race of noble men.
Who was foremost in the arena of nobility.
لاno وَالَّذيby Him who أَعلَقتُI fastened مِنout of تَقديسِهِreverence for Him

كَفّيmy palm بِحَبلَيto the two cords of عِصمَةٍprotection وَرَجاءِand hope
No—by Him, in reverence for whom I have fastened
No - by Him to whom I tied my hands in sanctity
my hand to the two cords of protection and hope,
And hope with the ropes of inviolability and hope.
وَخَرَرتُand I fell prostrate بَينَbetween يَدَيهِHis hands أَعلَمُknowing أَنَّهُthat He

and fallen prostrate before Him, knowing that He
And I fell prostrate before him knowing that he
is my reserve for days of hardship and ease—
Is my treasure for the day of hardship and ease.

no hope stirs me, now that death has settled
No hope swayed me, and doom has come
with Abu Muhammad in the far-off abode,
With the passing of my father, the remote abode,

where the light of that admired countenance is extinguished,
Where the light of the shining one is extinguished
and the luster of that radiant brow.
And the radiance of the brilliant one is masked.

It is grief enough that the hand of decay wreaks havoc
And it is enough gloom that the hand of decay
in effacing that beautiful form.
Effaces the form of that beautiful one.
فَلَطالَماfor many a time كُنّاwe used to نُريحُrest بِظِلِّهِin his shade

فَنُريحُand so we rest مِنهُfrom him بِسَرحَةٍbeneath a spreading tree غَنّاءِlush with foliage
For many a time we rested in his shade,
For we often took comfort in his shade,
and found repose in him, a lush, spreading tree,
Then found comfort in him with a melodious relaxation.
فَتَقَتopened عَلىat حُكمِthe command of البَشاشَةِcheerfulness نورَهاits blossoms

that opened its blossoms at cheerfulness's command
The splendor of geniality covered his light,
and breathed upon the faces of the seated companions.
And it breathed into the faces of the sitters.

Gloom clears away from him, as though he were
The clouds uncover before him as if he were
a moon tearing apart the cloak of darkness.
A moon rending the mantle of darkness.
قاسَمتُI shared فيهِover him الرُزءَthe bereavement أَكرَمَthe noblest صاحِبٍcompanion

I shared the loss of him with the noblest companion,
I shared hardship with the most generous friend,
and he went on staggering beneath the heaviest burdens.
And he passed away, bending under the heaviest burdens,
يَهفوsways كَماjust as هَفَتِswayed الأَراكَةُthe arak tree لَوعَةًin anguish

He sways in anguish as the arak tree sways,
Panting as the stricken she-camel pants in agony,
and at times moans with the gray dove's plaintive call.
And moaning at times with the moan of the leaf.
عَجَباًhow strange لَهاat it وَقَدَتit blazed بِصَدرٍin a breast جَمرَةًas an ember

How strange this anguish: it blazed in the breast as an ember,
Strange that it ignited an ember in a breast
and burst forth on the cheek as water.
And gushed forth from a cheek despite the water!
وَلَئِنand if indeed تَراءىappeared الفَرقَدانِthe two Farqad stars بِناin us مَعاًtogether

And if indeed the two Farqad stars appeared in us together—
And if the two friends were seen together by us,
and that is renown enough for you in nobility and eminence—
And your fame as a close and lofty friend suffices.
فَلَطالَماthen many a time كُنّاwe used to نَروقُdelight المُجتَليthe beholder

then many a time we delighted the beholder
For we often gazed at the shining one,
with beauty, and filled the eye of high heaven.
Filling the onlooker of the lofty with beauty.

The gathering's breast takes pride in us, as though we,
The bosom of the companion blossomed through us
arrayed there, were Orion's necklace.
As if we were, there, the necklace of the Pleiades.
