شَأَوتُI outpaced مَطاياmounts الصِباyouth مَطلَباin pursuit
وَطُلتُand I rose above ثَناياmountain passes العُلىglory مَرقَباto a lookout
I outpaced youth's mounts in my quest,
I aspired to ride the steeds of youth seeking my desire
and rose above glory's passes to a lookout.
And I searched the high ridges looking out
وَأَقبَلتُand I faced صَدرَthe breast of الدُجىdarkness عَزمَةًwith resolve
تُوَطِّئُmakes smooth ظَهرَthe back of السُرىnight travel مَركَباas a mount
I faced the breast of darkness with a resolve
And I marched with resolve to pierce the dark night
that made night travel's back a smooth mount.
To smooth the path for traveling the milky way
فَجُبتُso I traversed إِلىinto سُدفَةٍa darkness سُدفَةًa darkness
وَخُضتُand I waded through إِلىinto سَبسَبٍa wasteland سَبسَباa wasteland
So I crossed one darkness into another,
So I came to a howdah upon a howdah
and waded through one wasteland into another.
And I entered into a litter upon a litter
وَقُلتُand I said وَقَدand already شاقَنيstirred my longing مُلتَقىthe meeting of
شَميمِthe fragrance of العَرارِarar blossoms وَبَردُand the coolness of الصَباthe east wind
And I spoke, stirred to longing by the meeting
And I said when the meeting of the pleasant aroma
of arar's fragrance and the cool east wind:
And the cool north wind had distressed me:
خَليلَيَّmy two dear friends مِنfrom حِميَرٍHimyar حَدِّثاtell, you two

My two dear friends of Himyar, tell
"My friend, speak of the young she-camels
a gray-haired man of the nights of youth.
O brother of old age, about the nights of youth."
وَبُلّاand quench, you two بِذِكرِby recalling الهَوىlove غُلَّةًa burning thirst
بِصَدرِin the breast of كَريمٍa noble man صَباyearned ماas long as صَباhe yearned
And quench, by recalling love, a burning thirst
And renew tales of love's anguish
in the breast of a noble man who yearned as long as he yearned.
In the breast of a generous man - how he loved in his youth!
وَلاand never غامَgrew clouded ماwhenever غامَhe grew clouded حَتّىuntil اِنجَلىhe cleared

He never grew clouded without clearing again,
"Do not cease your tales until the early dawn light breaks
to shine anew, nor yielded without refusing.
And do not stop until you plainly refuse."
وَحَنَّand cooed plaintively هَديلٌa male dove عَلىon بانَةٍa ban tree
تَصَدّىstood forth خَطيباًas an orator بِهاon it أَخطَباdusky-plumed
And a dove cooed plaintively upon a ban tree,
And the cooing of a dove moaned over the high dwelling places,
stepping forth upon it as an eloquent, dusky-plumed orator.
Repulsing the orator who had come to propose.
فَأَذكَرَناso it reminded us لَيلَةًof a night بِاللِوىat al-Liwa
وَعَهداًand a time بِعَصرِin the age of الصِباyouth أَطرَباdelightful
It reminded us of a night at al-Liwa,
So it reminded us of a night at the encampment
and a delightful season in the age of youth,
And the days of youth - how joyous!
وَماءًand water بِواديin the valley of الغَضاal-Ghada سَلسَلاًsweet-flowing

and sweet-flowing water in Wadi al-Ghada,
And water in the valley of Al-Ghadha flowing
and a grassy spring encampment in al-Hima:
And resting at Al-Hima well-vegetated.

nights when I knew us as youths,
The nights of my era were youths
and knew our beloveds as a herd of gazelles.
And my era with my friends was tender."
وَماand how كانَwas أَعطَرَfragrant تِلكَthat الصَباeast wind

And how fragrant that east wind was,
There was no more fragrant than that youth
and how dewy the slopes of those hills!
No softer raiment than those pastures.
وَأَطيَبَand how sweet ذاكَthat الجَنىgathered fruit رَوضَةًas a garden
وَرَشفَةَand a sip of ذاكَthat اللِمىthe lips' duskiness مَشرَباas a drink
And how sweet that garden's fruit,
The fairest of gardens was that pasture
and a sip from those dusky lips as a drink!
And the purest drink from that preserve.
فَحَرَّكَso stirred مِنfrom within ساكِنٍa still one كامِنٌa hidden one
تَعاطيthe exchange of حَديثٍtalk يَحُلُّthat unties الحُبىknee-bindings
Then something hidden stirred that still heart:
So one settled stirred up charming conversation
the exchange of talk that loosened knee-bindings.
That would occupy a troubled soul.
وَلَمand not يَكُdid it يَعرِفُنيknow me أَمرَداًbeardless
طَريراًfresh-faced وَيَنكُرُنيand disown me أَشيَباgray-haired
It had not known me as a beardless youth,
He would not recognize me as a quick wit
fresh-faced, nor did it disown me gray-haired.
And he would deny knowing me as a grey hair.
فَكِدتُso I almost وَدونَand between me and الصِباyouth شَيبَةٌgray hair
أَجُرُّI drag back هُنالِكَthere ماwhat أَذهَباit had taken away
So I almost, though gray hair barred me from youth,
I almost shed - despite youth - white hair
dragged back there what had been carried away.
There I would shed the marks of old age.
وَقُلتُand I said وَحُبُّand love of الدُمىstatue-like beauties ذَنبُهُits sin
أَلاah غَفَرَmay forgive اللَهُGod ماwhatever أَذنَباit sinned
And I said—its sin was love of statue-like beauties—
And I said, "the sin of loving souls
'May God forgive whatever sins it committed!'
O God forgive what sins I have committed!"
وَصَعَّدتُand I sent up عَنfrom حُبِّهِlove of it زَفرَةًa sigh
يَكادُnearly لَهاbecause of it الصَدرُthe breast أَنto يَلهَباblaze
And from love of it I sent up a sigh
And I uttered from it a moan
at which my breast almost burst into flame.
That nearly set my breast aflame.
وَأَغرَبَand wrought a marvel مِنfrom لَوعَةٍanguish مَدمَعٌa tear
إِذاwhen لَجلَجَتstammered لَوعَةٌanguish أَعرَباit spoke clearly
And a tear wrought a marvel from anguish:
More wondrous than any agony is a teary eye
when anguish stammered, it spoke plainly.
When true agony bubbles forth tears.
وَرَدعُand the saffron stain of أَصيلٍlate afternoon لَوىenfolded مَعطِفيmy side
فَفَضَّضتُso I silvered بِالدَمعِwith tears ماwhat ذَهَّباit had gilded
And evening's saffron stain enfolded my side;
I pulled back the reins and my cloak slipped
with tears I silvered what it had gilded.
So I let flow with tears what had slipped.
وَشَعشَعتُand I diluted مِنهُwith some of it بِظَهرِon the back of النَقاthe sand dune
شَراباًa wine أُرَقرِقُهُI make it shimmer أَصهَباtawny
And with some of it, on the dune's back, I diluted
And I toasted its back with the she-camel's saddlebags
a tawny wine that I made shimmer.
A drink I would sip and relish.
وَأَعوَلتُand I wailed أَندُبُlamenting عَصراًan age خَلاthat passed
وَقَصرُand the limit of اِبنِa man of سِتّينَsixty أَنto يَندُباlament
And I wailed, lamenting an age now gone;
And I lamented, crying for a past era
a man of sixty can do no more than lament.
Too short for the son of sixty years to cry over.
وَشَبَّبتُand I sang of love أَطرَبُI feel delight لاnot عَنfrom هَوىًpassion
وَهَلand does يَطرَبُfeel delight المَرءُa man إِنif شَبَّباhe sings of love
I sang of love for delight, not out of passion;
And I grew tender, enraptured not for love -
and does a man feel delight if he sings of love?
Does a man grow tender if he does not become youthful?
لَكَto you الخَيرُgoodness شِختُI have aged سِوىexcept for مِقوَلٍa tongue
نَبيلٍnoble يُذَهِّبُthat gilds ماهَذَّباwhat it refines
Blessings on you! I have aged, except for a tongue
Goodness to you, I have aged beyond any saying
of nobility, gilding what it refines.
Of a noble one who takes away what is frivolous.
فَصارَso it began يُذَكِّرُنيreminding me ماwhat يَسُرُّdelights
كَلامٌspeech إِذاwhen ماever طَرىit is fresh طَرَّباit brings rapture
So it came to remind me of what delights:
So he reminds me of what pleases me
speech that brings rapture whenever it is fresh,
Speech, when it flows, enraptures.
كَلامٌspeech يَجِدُّthat deals earnestly بِلُبِّwith the heart of الفُتىthe young man
ذَهاباًcarrying it away إِذاwhen شاءَit wishes أَنto يَلعَباplay
speech that deals earnestly with a young man's heart,
Speech that titillates the heart of a youth
carrying it off whenever it chooses to play.
Vanishing when it wishes to flirt.
تَحَمَّلَit bore ماشاءَwhatever it wished مِنof رِقَّةٍtenderness
فَحَيّاthen it greeted عَنِon behalf of المَشرِقِthe East المَغرِباthe West
It bore whatever tenderness it wished,
It carries whatever gentleness it desires
and greeted the West on behalf of the East.
So greetings from east to west.
وَكادَand it nearly بِماwith what فيهِit contains مِنof بَلَّةٍmoisture

يَسومُbids الصَحيفَةَthe page أَنto تُعشِباsprout grass
And with the moisture it contained, it almost
And it nearly marks the page with its eloquence
bade the page sprout grass.
That the parchment may become verdant.
فَلِلَّهِso, to God be praise قَولِيَmy speech ماhow أَهذَباrefined
وَلِلَّهِand to God be praise لَفظِيَmy diction ماhow أَعذَباsweet
God be praised for my speech—how refined!
By God my words have not lied
And God be praised for my diction—how sweet!
By God my diction is not unsweet.
وَلِلَّهِand to God belongs دَرُّthe excellence of أَخيa man of سودَدٍnobility
رَساhe stood firm هَضبَةًas a hill وَسَرىand traveled by night كَوكَباas a star
And God bless the man of nobility,
By God the worth of my brother Sudad
rooted as a hill, roaming by night as a star.
Is a pleasing elevated plateau and a wandering star.
تَصوبُpours rain السَماءُthe sky إِذاwhen ماحَباever he bestows gifts
وَيَمثُلُand looms رَضوىRadwa إِذاwhen ماever اِحتَبىhe sits clasping his knees
The sky pours rain whenever he gives,
The sky takes aim when he is loved
and Radwa looms when he sits clasping his knees.
And he represents approval when embraced.
وَتَعشوand seek light by night الضُيوفُthe guests إِلىtoward نارِهِhis fire
فَتَلقىso they find هُناكَthere أَلاah مَرحَباwelcome
And guests seek his fire by night,
The guests flock to his fire
and find there, 'Ah, welcome!'
And there find a hearty welcome!
وَتَمضيand carries onward بِهِwith him فيin الوَغىbattle نَجدَةٌcourage

مَضىcut through السَيفُthe sword فيin كَفِّهِhis hand أَوor نَباglanced off
And courage carries him onward into battle,
And valor carries him into the fray
whether the sword in his hand cuts through or glances off.
The sword in his grasp thrusts and strikes.
فَتَرضىso are pleased الصَوارِمُthe keen swords عَنهُwith him أَخاًas a brother
وَتَشكُرُand thank مِنهُin him المَعاليhigh honors أَباa father
So keen swords are pleased with him as a brother,
The swords are pleased with him as a brother
and high honors thank him as a father.
And the heights thank him as a father.
وَقَدand already لَثَمَkissed النَقعُthe dust أُسدَthe lions of الشَرىal-Shara

وَكَرَّتand charged again بِهاwith them الخَيلُthe horses تَعدوgalloping تُباin troops
While dust kissed the lions of al-Shara,
Concord has sealed the lion of nobility
and horses charged again with them, galloping in troops,
And the steeds circle, charging and returning.
فَلَمso not تَرَyou saw إِلّاexcept نَجيعاًblood جَرىthat flowed

you saw nothing but streaming blood,
They see nothing but carnage flowing
a splintered spear and a fallen steed.
And a spear shattered and a side pierced.
لَقَدindeed عَرَفَتrecognized قَدرَهُhis worth دَولَةٌa state

A state has indeed recognized his worth,
A dynasty knew his worth, ransoming him
ransoming through him the noblest, most distinguished.
With the most generous and perfect.
وَتَعتَدَّهُand counts him المُنتَقىthe chosen المُتَّقىthe one held in awe
عَلىfor الخَيرِgoodness وَالحُوَّلِand the resourceful القُلَّباthe versatile
And it counts him the chosen, the one held in awe,
The elite of the devout and the reverent
for goodness, resourceful and versatile.
For good and changing fortune esteem him.
تَقِلُّis too little الوِزارَةُthe vizierate فيfor حَقِّهِhis due
وَتَنزِلُand falls عَنbelow قَدرِهِhis worth مَنصِباas an office
The vizierate is paltry beside his due,
Taxation is paltry in his case
and, as an office, falls below his worth.
And position falls short of his merit.
تَطولُtowers higher السَماءُthe sky بِآبائِهِthrough his forefathers
وَتُحصيand counts بِهِمin them كَوكَباًa star كَوكَباa star
The sky towers higher through his forefathers,
The sky is prolonged through his forefathers
and counts them as stars, one by one.
And counts them star by star.
وَتَنقادُand submit غُرُّthe brightest of المَعاليhigh honors لَهُto him
فَيَقتادُهاso he leads them مِقنَباًa troop مِقنَباa troop
The radiant heights of honor submit to him,
The vanity of pomp bows before him
and he leads them troop by troop.
So he leads it step by step.
وَيَلأَمُand gathers شَتّىthe scattered parts of العُلىeminence وَالحِلىand adornments

عَلىat حينَa time when أَصبَحنَthey had become أَيديthe hands of سَباSaba
And he gathers the scattered heights and adornments,
At daybreak he seizes the assets of eminence and beauty
when they had become as scattered as Saba's hands.
While hands were outstretched in the morning for spoils.
وَحَسبُand enough for المُنىhopes أَنthat سَرىtraveled by night مَوعِدٌa promise

كَفيلٌa guarantor بِنَيلِof attaining المُنىhopes مَطلَباas a goal
And enough for hopes is a promise that came by night,
And his promise is enough to attain what is desired
guaranteeing attainment of their desired goal.
A guarantor for fulfilling what is sought.
تَوالَتcame successively رِقاعُكَyour letters تَترىone after another بِهِwith it
وَشُكريand my thanks لَهاfor them مَوكِباًa procession مَوكِباa procession
Your letters came one after another bearing it,
Your messages came in succession, so my thanks
and my thanks for them, procession after procession.
Go out to them in procession, procession.
وَغَيرِيَand someone other than me مَنone whom غَرَّهُdeceived him مَوعِدٌa promise
يَشيمُwatches for بِهِin it بارِقاًlightning خُلَّباrainless
Another, not I, is one whom a promise deceives,
Others fooled by a promise
watching in it for lightning that brings no rain.
Proceed with it glittering and playful.
فَخُذهاso take it إِلَيكَto yourself تَهُزُّit stirs الفَتىthe young man
وَمِنand of شيمَةِthe nature of الراحِwine أَنto تُطرِباbring delight
So receive it: it stirs a young man,
So take them to yourself, they gladden the youth!
and wine's nature is to bring delight.
The nature of the gentle breeze is to enrapture.
خَصَصتُI singled out الأَخَصَّthe closest بِهاwith it أَثرَةًas a mark of favor
وَحَيَّيتُand I greeted بِالأَطيَبِwith the finest الأَطيَباthe finest
I favored the closest with it as a mark of preference,
I singled out the closest with them especially
and greeted the finest with the finest.
And greeted the sweetest of all with the sweetest.
وَسُمتُand I bade البَراعَةَeloquence أَنto تَنكَفيpour forth
وَذُلقَand the keen tip of اليَراعَةِthe reed pen أَنto تَكتُباwrite
And I bade eloquence pour forth,
I characterized excellence to withdraw
and the reed-pen's keen tip write.
While the clumsiness of vulgarity is to write.
وَأَجرَيتُand I set running مِنfrom مُدَّةٍink أَدهَماًa black steed
وَوَقَّرتُand I loaded مِنfrom مُهرَقٍpaper أَشهَباa gray steed
I set a black steed of ink running,
And I let flow a dark sacrificial camel
and loaded a gray steed of paper.
And kept back a lead-colored old she-camel.
تَرَكتُI left القُلوبَhearts لَهُfor it مَربَطاًa tethering-ground
وَصَدرَand the forefront of النَدِيِّthe assembly بِهِthrough it مَلعَباa playing-ground
I left hearts as its tethering-ground,
I left hearts bound to it
and, through it, the assembly's forefront a field of play.
And the breast of the beloved playing with it.
