أَرَقتُI lay sleepless أَكُفَّI hold back الدَمعِthe tears طَوراًat times وَأَسفَحُand I pour forth
وَأَنضَحُand I sprinkle خَدّيmy cheek تارَةًsometimes ثُمَّthen أَمسَحُI wipe
I lay sleepless, at times holding back my tears, at times pouring them out,
I shed tears profusely for a while, then let them flow
and sprinkle my cheek at times, then wipe it.
And at times wet my cheeks, then wipe them dry
وَدونَكَand between me and you طَمّاحٌsurging high مِنَof الماءِthe water مائِجٌbillowing
يُعَبُّroars وَمُغبَرٌّand dust-covered مِنَof التُربِthe earth أَفيَحُwide-spreading
And between us lies high-surging, turbulent water,
Below you is a weeping cloud, pouring down rain
roaring, and a vast, dust-covered stretch of earth.
Dusting the ground and stirring up dust
وَإِنّيand indeed I إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle اللَيلُthe night جاءَcame بِفَحمَةٍwith coal-black darkness
لَأوريI surely kindle زِنادَfire-sticks الهَمِّof grief فيهاwithin it فَأَقدَحُthen I strike sparks
And when night comes with its coal-black darkness,
When night comes with its darkness
I kindle within it grief's fire-sticks and strike sparks.
I light the flint of worries and strike a flame
وَأُتبِعُand I follow طيبَthe fragrance الذِكرِof remembrance أَنَّةُa groan موجَعٍof one in pain
فَيَنفَحُso it wafts fragrance هَذاthis one حَيثُwhere هاتيكَthat one تَلفَحُscorches
And I follow remembrance's fragrance with a sufferer's groan,
And follow the sweet memory of one in pain
so this wafts fragrance where that scorches.
So it wafts here as longing flows there
وَأَلقىand I find بَياضَthe whiteness الصُبحِof dawn يَسوَدُّblackens وَحشَةًwith desolation
فَأَحسِبُنيso I think myself أُمسيI enter evening عَلىat حينَthe time أُصبِحُI enter morning
And I see dawn's whiteness blacken with desolation,
I face the dawn growing dark and gloomy
so I think I enter evening just as I enter morning.
Thinking it is night when morning should break
وَيوحِشُنيand frightens me ناعٍa death-announcer مِنَfrom اللَيلِthe night ناعِبٌcroaking
فَأَزجُرُso I divine an omen مِنهُfrom it بارِحاًan ill-omened, left-passing bird لَيسَdoes not يَبرَحُdepart
And a croaking herald of death from the night fills me with dread,
A companion of night startles me with his wailing
so I read from it an ill omen that never departs.
I deter him at night but he won't budge
وَأَستَقبِلُand I face الدُنياthe world بِذِكرىwith the memory of مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad
فَيَقبُحُso it becomes ugly فيin عَينَيَّmy two eyes ماكانَwhat once was يَلمُحُgleaming
And I face the world with the memory of Muhammad,
I start my day remembering Muhammad
so what once gleamed turns ugly in my eyes.
And all that once pleased me now seems ugly
وَأُشفِقُand I fear مِنof مَوتِthe death الصِباof youth ثُمَّthen إِنَّنيindeed I
لَآمُلُI surely hope أَنَّthat اللَهَGod يَعفوpardons وَيَصفَحُand forgives
And I fear the death of youth; yet I
I fear the death of youth but then I hope
surely hope that God will pardon and forgive.
God will forgive and pardon my sins
غُلامٌa youth كَماjust as اِستَخشَنتَyou found rough جانِبَthe flank هَضبَةٍof a hill
وَلانَand grew soft عَلىunder طَشٍّa sprinkle مِنَfrom المُزنِthe rainclouds أَبطَحُa pebbled riverbed
A youth—like a hill's flank that you find rugged,
A boy seized the side of a hill
and a pebbled riverbed grown soft under a sprinkle from rainclouds.
Galloping freely though stumbling on pebbles
أَقولُI say وَقَدand already وافىhas arrived كِتابُthe letter نَعيِهِannouncing his death
يُجَمجِمُmumbles فيin أَلفاظِهِits words فَيُصَرِّحُthen speaks plainly
I say, now that the letter announcing his death has arrived,
I say as the letter announcing his death arrived
mumbling in its words, then speaking plainly:
Its words explicit though causing distress
أَرامٍis there an archer? بِأَغماتٍin Aghmat يُسَدِّدُtakes aim with سَهمَهُhis arrow
فَيَرميthen he shoots وَقَلبٌwhile a heart بِالجَزيرَةِin al-Jazira يُجرَحُis wounded
Does an archer in Aghmat take aim with his arrow,
A Syrian with suppressed sorrows aims his arrow
then shoot, while a heart in al-Jazira is wounded?
And shoots, wounding a heart in the Levant
فَياso alas! لَغَريبٍfor a stranger فاجأَتهُtook him by surprise مَنِيَّةٌdeath
أَتَتهُcame to him عَلىduring عَهدِthe time الشَبابِof youth تُلَحلِحُsettles in
Alas for a stranger whom death took by surprise,
Oh stranger whom death unexpectedly took
coming to him in the days of youth and settling there.
In the prime of youth, persisting and forceful
كَأَنَّas though لَهيباًa flame بَينَbetween جَنبَيَّmy two sides واقِداًblazing
بِهِbecause of him وَرَكاياand wells بَينَbetween جَفنَيَّmy two eyelids تُمتَحُare drawn from
As though a flame were blazing between my ribs
As if a flaming fire burned between my ribs
because of him, and wells between my eyelids were being drawn from.
With embers between my eyelids glowing
جَلَستُI sat أَسومُI heap upon الدَهرَTime فيهِon his account مَلامَةًblame
وَكُنتُand I had been كَماas قَدalready كُنتُI had been أُثنيI extol وَأَمدَحُand I praise
I sat heaping blame upon Time on his account,
I blamed fate though I used to praise and flatter
though I had formerly extolled and praised it.
You'd see me moan like a heart-broken dove
تَرانيyou see me إِذاwhen أَعوَلتُI wailed حُزناًin sorrow حَمامَةًa dove
تُرِنُّcooing وَطَوراًand at times أَيكَةًa thicket تَتَرَنَّحُswaying
When I wail in sorrow, you see me as a dove
Drowning in a sea of tears, worries and darkness
cooing, and at times as a swaying thicket,
I would swim even if it were just one sea
غَريقاًdrowning بِبَحرِin a sea of الدَمعِtears وَالهَمُّand grief وَالدُجىand darkness
وَلَوand if كانَit were بَحراًa sea واحِداًone كُنتُI would be أَسبَحُswimming
drowning in a sea of tears, and grief, and darkness—
I send the northern winds greetings
if it were just one sea, I could swim.
Sighing under the water of my eyes until it trembles
أُحَمِّلُI load أَنفاسَthe breaths الشَمالِof the north wind تَحِيَّةًa greeting
يَنوءُstruggles beneath the load بِهاunder it مِنfrom ماءِthe water جَفنيof my eyelid فَيَرزَحُthen sinks under its weight
I load the breaths of the north wind with a greeting;
I glance up at the sky and ache
it strains beneath its load of water from my eyelid, then sinks.
Swaying southward though I resist and abstain
فَليso I have نَظرَةٌa gaze نَحوَtoward السَماءِthe sky وَلَوعَةٌand burning longing
تَلَدَّدُturns restlessly بيwith me نَحوَtoward الجَنوبِthe south فَأَجنَحُso I incline
So I have a gaze toward the sky, and a burning longing
I held back my soul though it insisted
that turns me restlessly southward, so I incline that way.
And resisted despair though patience is best
فَرادَعتُso I tried to restrain عَنهاaway from it النَفسَthe soul وَالنَفسُwhile the soul صَبَّةٌpassionately yearning
وَراوَغتُand I evaded حُسنَthe beauty الصَبرِof patience وَالصَبرُwhile patience أَرجَحُweightier
So I held my soul back from it, though my soul was yearning,
Sleep my tearful eyes
and evaded fair patience, though patience was weightier.
For each vessel exudes what fills it
فَنَمِّso tattled بِأَسرارِabout the secrets of الصَبابَةِpassionate longing مَدمَعيmy tears
وَكُلُّand every إِناءٍvessel بِالَّذيwith what فيهِis within it يَرشَحُseeps
So my tears betrayed the secrets of longing,
I despaired a heart that used to flutter with hope
and every vessel seeps what lies within it.
And ambitions would surge in it and aspire
وَأَيأَستُand I drove to despair قَلباًa heart كانَthat had been يَخفِقُfluttering تارَةًat times
وَتَنزوand leap بِهِwith it الآمالُhopes طَوراًat times فَيَطمَحُso it reaches high
And I drove to despair a heart that sometimes fluttered,
I no longer expect travelers to bring tidings
and at times hopes made it leap, so it reached high.
Or a message to read and contemplate
فَماso no longer أَتَلَقّىdo I meet الرَكبَthe caravan أَرجوhoping for تَحِيَّةًa greeting
تُوافيarriving لَهُon his behalf أَوor رُقعَةًa letter تَتَصَفَّحُto peruse
So I no longer meet the caravan hoping for a greeting
My eyes are tied to the night by a dark blue rope
arriving on his behalf, or a letter to peruse.
And grey tears flow freely down my cheek
فَفيfor in ناظِريmy eye لِلَّيلِfor night مَربَطُa tethering-place أَدهَمٍa black steed
وَفيand on وَجنَتيmy cheek لِلدَمعِfor tears أَشهَبُa gray steed يَجمَحُbolts uncontrollably
For in my eye, night has a black steed's tethering-place,
When the palace of company breeds loneliness
and on my cheek, tears have a gray steed running wild.
I do not wish to be happy and rejoice
إِذاif كانَis قَصرُthe palace الأُنسِof companionship بِالإِلفِwith the loved one وَحشَةًdesolation
فَماthen I do not أَشتَهيdesire أَنّيthat I أُسَرُّbe gladdened فَأَفرَحُand so rejoice
If the palace of companionship with a loved one is desolate,
O you who faces night vigilant and wakeful
I have no desire to be gladdened and rejoice.
Walking far and wide wiping out miles
فَياso O عارِضاًraincloud يَستَقبِلُmeets اللَيلَthe night واكِفاًpouring rain
وَيَسريand travels by night فَيَطويthen folds up الأَطوَلَينِthe two longest spans وَيَمسَحُand sweeps across
O raincloud, meeting the night as you pour down,
Take to the stranger's grave tears falling
and traveling by night, folding up the two longest spans and sweeping across them,
Where you walked may they flow and drench
تَحَمَّلcarry إِلىto قَبرِthe grave الغَريبِof the stranger مَزادَةًa waterskin
مِنَof الدَمعِtears تَندىgrows moist حَيثُwherever سِرتَyou travel وَتَنضَحُand sprinkles drops
carry to the stranger's grave a waterskin
And send greetings across the sea to reach him
of tears, damp and dripping wherever you travel;
May the flowers of the valley emit their fragrance
وَأَحفىand the most heartfelt سَلامٍgreeting يَعبُرُcrosses البَحرَthe sea دونَهُon the way to him
فَيَندىso it grows dewy وَأَزهارَand flowers البِطاحِof the plains فَتَنفَحُso they waft fragrance
and the warmest greeting, crossing the sea on the way to him,
Stop by the beloved's tomb with a glance
growing dewy; and flowers of the plains, wafting fragrance.
That makes my eyes see him there and discern
وَعَرِّجand turn aside عَلىto مَثوىthe resting place الحَبيبِof the beloved بِنَظرَةٍwith a glance
تَراهُsees him بِهاthrough it عَينيmy eye هُناكَthere وَتَلمَحُand glimpses
And turn aside to the beloved's resting place with a glance
through which my eye may see him there and glimpse him.
