تَخَيَّرتُهُI chose him مِنfrom رَهطِthe stock of أَعوَجَAʿwaj سابِحاًa swimming galloper
أَغَرَّwhite-blazed كَريمَnoble الوالِدَينِboth parents نَجيباwell-bred
I chose him from Aʿwaj's stock, a swimming steed,
I chose him from a crooked tribe swimming,
white-blazed, of noble parentage, well-bred;
He deceived the generous parents, being of noble descent.
خَفيفاًlight-footed وَلَمand did not يَحلُمdream بِسَوطٍof a whip كَأَنَّماas though

light-footed, never dreaming of a whip, as though
Lightweight, he never dreamed of a whip, as if
he were outstripping an enemy or heading toward a beloved.
He would miss an enemy or be a lover's confidant.
سَرىhe traveled by night وَاِنتَمىand rose بَرقٌlightning بِذيat Dhu الأَثلِal-Athl (the tamarisk) لَيلَةًone night
فَباتَso spent the night بِهاduring it هَذاthis one لِذاكَto that one نَسيباakin
He sped by night, and lightning rose at Dhu al-Athl one night;
He traveled at night when lightning struck Athl,
so, that night, this one was kin to that one.
So he spent the night with her, one to the other a relative.
وَحَنَّand he yearned إِلىfor سَفَرٍtravel فَطارَthen he flew إِلىtoward السُرىnight-travel
يَخوضُwades through خَليجاًa water channel أَوor يَجوبُtraverses كَثيباa sand dune
And he yearned for travel, then flew off through the night,
And he longed for a journey, so he flew to travel,
wading through a channel or crossing a sand dune.
To cross a gulf or traverse a dune.
يَؤُمُّheads toward بِهاthrough it أَرضاًa land عَلَيَّto me كَريمَةًprecious
وَمُرتَبَعاًand a springtime retreat فيهاwithin it إِلَيَّto me حَبيباbeloved
Through the night he heads for a land precious to me,
He would visit her, to me a generous land,
and a springtime retreat within it, beloved to me;
And dwell in it, to me a beloved.
وَنَهراًand a river كَماas اِبيَضَّgleamed white المُقَبِّلُthe mouth (place of kissing) سَلسَلاًlimpid
وَجِزعاًand a valley bend كَماas اِخضَرَّturned green العِذارُthe cheek's down خَصيباfertile
and a limpid river, white as the mouth one kisses,
And a river as the kissing whitened a chain,
and a fertile valley bend, green as a cheek's down.
And a trunk as the fresh became verdant and fruitful.
وَرُبَّand many a نَسيمٍbreeze مَرَّpassed بيby me وَهوَwhile it was عاطِرٌfragrant
رَقيقُdelicate الحَواشيat the edges لايُحَسُّis not felt دَبيباin its creeping movement
And many a breeze passed me, fragrant,
And many a gentle breeze passed me by, fragrant,
delicate at its edges, its creeping movement unfelt.
Delicate of edges, its creeping unfelt.
وَجَدتُand I found بِهِin it مِنfrom ذَلِكَthat الماءِwater بَلَّةًmoisture
وَمِنand from نورِthe blossoms of هاتيكَthose الأَباطِحِgravelly streambeds طيباfragrance
And in it I found moisture from that water,
I found in it from that water a trial,
and fragrance from the blossoms of those gravelly streambeds.
And from the light of those plains, delight.
فَصافَحتُso I shook hands with رَيعانَthe first freshness of النَسيمِthe breeze تَشَوُّقاًin longing
إِلَيهاfor it وَلازَمتُand I clung to القَضيبَthe bough رَطيباfresh and moist
So I clasped the breeze in its first freshness, yearning
So I shook the hands of the breeze's youths longing
for it, and clung to the fresh, moist bough.
For it and held fast to the delicate rod.
وَقَدand already قَلَّدَgarlanded النُوّارُthe blossoms جيداًa neck لِرَبوَةٍof a hillock
هُناكَthere وَنحراًand a breast لِلفَضاءِof the open expanse رَحيباbroad
And blossoms had already garlanded a hillock's neck
And the wild beasts had necklaced a hillside for a paunch
there, and the broad breast of the open expanse.
There and a throat for the spacious plain.
وَأَفصَحَتِand gave clear voice الوَرقاءُthe gray dove فيin كُلِّevery تَلعَةٍravine
نَشيداًa song وَقَدwhile already رَقَّgrew tender النَسيمُthe breeze نَسيباin love-song
And the gray dove gave clear voice in every ravine
And the leaves were eloquent in every mound
to song, while the breeze grew tender in love-song.
A chant, as the breeze softened, gentle.
وَكانَand it was عَلىin عَهدِthe days of الشَبابِyouth تَغَنِّياًsinging
يَشوقُstirs longing in أَخاone possessed of وَجدٍpassionate love فَعادَthen it became نَحيباsobbing
And in the days of youth it had been a song
And in the days of youth it sang,
that stirred a lover's longing; then it turned to sobbing.
Yearning for a brother and friend returned, weeping.
دَعاit called لِغُروبِfor streams of الدَمعِtears وَالدارُwhile the abode غُربَةٌwas exile
فَلَمso I did not أَرَsee إِلّاexcept داعِياًone calling وَمُجيباand one answering
It called for streams of tears, while the abode was exile;
It called for the sunset of tears, and the house was strange,
so I saw only one calling and one answering.
So I saw none but a caller and respondent.
