أَهُزُّكَI brandish you لاnot إِنّيindeed I إِخالُكَI think you نابِياblunt
وَإِنand even though كُنتَyou are مَطرورَsharpened الغِرارِthe cutting edge يَمانِياYemeni
I brandish you—not because I think you blunt—
I shake you not out of anger towards you
though you are keen-edged, a Yemeni blade.
Though you be perfidious, treacherous, traitorous
وَلَكِنَّand yet هَزَّbrandishing السَيفِthe sword وَالسَوطِand the whip شيمَتيmy wont
وَإِنand even if رُعتُI startled سَبّاقاًa swift racer وَنبَّهتُand I roused ماضِياa keen blade
But brandishing sword and whip is my wont,
But it is the nature of sword and whip to shake
even if I startle a swift racer and rouse a keen blade.
If I precede the racers and arouse the dormant
وَماand nothing هَزَّstirred أَعطافَthe sides الكَريمِof the noble man إِلىtoward العُلىthe heights
كَأَروَعَlike a valiant man شَيحانٍspirited يَهُزُّhe brandishes العَوالِياthe long spears
And nothing stirs a noble man's frame toward the heights
None has shaken the sides of the noble steed
like a valiant, spirited warrior brandishing long spears.
Like a fine-bred stallion shaking its mane
إِذاif السَيفُthe sword لَمhas not يَشرَبdrunk بِهِwith it الدَمَthe blood قانِئاًcrimson

If he has not drunk, with the sword, blood crimson
When the sword drinks not the blood boiling hot
and freshly shed, he refuses to drink water, though thirsty.
Thirsty, it refuses to drink cold water
وَقَدand indeed نُطتُI have attached آماليmy hopes بِأَبلَجَto a radiant man واضِحٍbright-faced
يُجَشِّمُهاhe burdens them أَمضىkeener مِنَthan السَيفِthe sword عارِياunsheathed
And I have pinned my hopes on a radiant, bright-faced man,
I had pinned my hopes on a shining full moon
who puts them through hardship, keener than a sword unsheathed,
To be ripped apart by a bare, sharper sword
وَأَكرَمَand more generous آثاراًin deeds مِنَthan المُزنِthe rain clouds غادِياًsetting out at dawn
وَأَشهَرَand more conspicuous أَوضاحاًin bright markings مِنَthan البَدرِthe full moon سارِياtraveling by night
and more generous in his deeds than rain clouds setting out at dawn,
Leaving brighter traces than the tail of a comet
and more conspicuous in his radiance than the full moon traveling by night.
And more luminous lines than the rising moon
فَماso no الغُصُنُthe bough المَطلولُdew-drenched أَشرَفَrose into view باسِماًsmiling
وَمادَand swayed أُصَيلاناًat eventide عَلىover الماءِthe water صافِياclear
So no dew-drenched bough, rising into view with a smile
What sprig is nobler in name, more high-reaching
and swaying at eventide above the clear water,
Than our family line, pure and extending to water
بِأَليَنَany suppler أَعطافاًin its limbs وَأَحسَنَand lovelier هَشَّةًin cheerful welcome
وَأعَطَرَand more fragrant أَخلاقاًin character وَأَندىand dewier حَواشِياat the edges
is suppler of limb or lovelier in welcome,
With softer sides and better mettle
or more fragrant in character, or dewier at its edges than he.
And sweeter nature and greener edges
