أَجَبتُI answered وَقَدand already نادىcalled out الغَرامُpassionate love فَأَسمَعاand made itself heard
عَشِيَّةَat evening غَنّانيsang to me الحَمامُthe doves فَرَجَّعاthen trilled
I answered when love called out and made itself heard,
I answered though love had called, so listen,
At evening, when the doves sang to me and trilled.
In the evening, the doves cooed to me, so return,
فَقُلتُso I said وَليand I had دَمعٌtears تَرَقرَقَwelled up فَاِنهَمىthen poured down
يَسيلُflows وَصَبرٌand patience قَدalready وَهىweakened فَتَضَعضَعاthen crumbled
So I said, my tears welling up and pouring down,
And I said, though I have tears flowing down, so be consoled,
Streaming, while my patience had weakened and crumbled:
They flow, and patience has weakened, so be shaken,
أَلاah هَلis there إِلىto أَرضِthe land of الجَزيرَةِal-Jazira أَوبَةٌa return
فَأَسكُنَso I may grow calm أَنفاساًbreaths وَأَهدَأَand I may be at ease مَضجَعاa resting-place
Ah, is there a return to the land of al-Jazira,
Oh! Is there no return to the land of Al-Jazirah,
So I may breathe calmly and lie at ease,
Where I may rest my breath and calm my bed,
وَأَغدوand I go at dawn بِواديهاin its valley وَقَدand already نَضَحَsprinkled النَدىthe dew
مَعاطِفَthe folds of هاتيكَthose الرُبىhills ثُمَّthen أَقشَعاcleared away
And go at dawn through its valley, when the dew has sprinkled
And walk in its valley when the dew has wet
The folds of those hills, then cleared away?
The mantles of those hills, then clear up,
أُغازِلُI court فيهاtherein لِلغَزالَةِof the sun سُنَّةًa face
تُحَطُّdraws down الصَباthe east wind عَنهاfrom her مِنَof الغَيمِcloud بُرقُعاa veil
There I court the sun’s face,
I would flirt with a gazelle, a tradition,
From which the east wind draws down a veil of cloud.
Whose youth the clouds uncover with pieces of rain,
وَقَدand already فَضَّunstrung عِقدَthe necklace of القَطرِraindrops فيin كُلِّevery تَلعَةٍhollow
نَسيمٌa breeze تَمَشّىwandered بَينَهاamong them فَتَضَوَّعاand spread fragrance
And the necklace of raindrops in every hollow has been unstrung
And the rain pearls in every mound have unpacked,
By a breeze that wandered among them, spreading fragrance.
A breeze walked among them, so intertwined,
وَباتَand spent the night سَقيطُfalling drops of الطَلِّdew يَضرِبُstriking سَرحَةًa spreading tree
تَرِفُّsways بِواديهاin its valley وَيَنضَحُand sprinkles أَجرَعاa sandy rise
And all night, falling dew pattered on a spreading tree,
And the dripping of the hanging pearls kept striking a pasture,
Swaying in its valley, and sprinkled a sandy rise.
Flowing in its valley, and the thickets overflowed,
وَأَينَand where فِناthe courtyard of دارٍa home إِلَيَّto me حَبيبَةٍdear
وَحَسبُكَand enough for you مُصطافاًa summer retreat هُناكَthere وَمَربَعاand a spring retreat
And where is the courtyard of a home dear to me?
And where is the house of a beloved of mine,
And there it suffices as your summer and spring retreat.
And isn’t Al-Mustafa there enough for you as a square,
لَقَدindeed تَرَكَتنيit left me بَينَbetween جَفنٍan eyelid جَفاshunned الكَرىsleep

Indeed, it has left me between an eyelid that shuns sleep
You left me with an eyelid worn out by insomnia,
And a side that tosses restlessly, at ease in no bed.
And a side cracked from turning - no longer fitting for a bed,
أُقَلِّبُI turn طَرفيmy gaze فيin السَماءِthe sky لَعَلَّنيperhaps I may
أَشيمُI watch for سَناthe gleam of بَرقٍlightning هُناكَthere تَطَلَّعاcame into view
I turn my gaze about the sky, hoping I may
I toss my eyes about the sky, hoping
Glimpse the gleam of lightning that has appeared there.
To smell a flash of lightning there, looking,
