ياحَبَّذاOh, how delightful! وَالطَيفُand the dream-phantom ضَيفٌa guest طارِقٌarriving by night
طَيفٌa phantom عَلىdespite شَحطٍdistance أَجَدَّrenewed مَزاراa visit
How delightful—the dream-phantom is a guest arriving by night!
O beloved, the breeze is a guest that comes knocking
A phantom that renewed its visit despite the distance.
A breeze on parched land that found a place to rest
تَلويsways الشَمالُthe north wind بِهِwith it قَضيباًa bough رُبَّماsometimes
عاطىoffered بِسوسانٍwith a lily هُناكَthere عَرارا‘arār (a yellow oxeye flower)
The north wind sways it, a bough that sometimes
The north winds twist it into a rod now and then
offered an ‘arār blossom there with a lily.
Granting it the fragrance of lilies there to spread
فَلَثَمتُso I kissed فيماamong what قَدalready لَثَمتُI kissed عَلاقَةًout of love
خَدّاًa cheek يَسيلُflows مَعَalong with العُقارِthe wine عُقاراwine
So, among what I had kissed, I kissed out of love
So I kissed what I had kissed, a cheek that would pour
a cheek that flowed as wine alongside the wine.
From lips with wine, wine in ceaseless pour
ماnot إِنat all (emphasizing negation) دَرَيتُI knew وَقَدand indeed نَعِمتُI delighted بِلَثمِهِin kissing it
ماذاwhat رَأَيتُI saw أَجَنَّةًa paradise? أَمor ناراfire
I did not know at all, though I had delighted in kissing it,
I did not know when I enjoyed that kiss
what I had seen—a paradise or fire?
If it was Paradise or flames that met my eyes
