جَعَلَ العِذارُ بِها يَسيلُ مَدادا
He came to us, his cheek a sheet of paper,
There came to us and him a page of a book
On which his cheek-down began to flow as ink,
On which regret made its ink freely flow

Frowning, bereft of youth, as though
Frowning, as if regretting the passing of youth,
His cheek-down had spread mourning black over youth.
Spreading grief over youth like mourning clothes
