Ah, how lovely a feast day on which wishes came together!

And gray age revived something of youth's days.

And a dappled one appeared, with a fair woman's beauty,

A hand-reared pet, playing with the ladies of curtained chambers.

She stepped gracefully, swaying in fright; then bent

Her slender bough, and at its sway a sand dune quivered.

And a black one—by lineage she is a ewe,

Pleasing to the eye, but in stature a noble-bred camel.

In her dwelt, between shade and watering place,

A lush pasture in the hollow of the two valleys.

    وَهَل زارَ إِلّا في الظَلامِ حَبيبُ

    She came to you, sheltered by the shades of youth;

And has a beloved ever visited except in the dark?

So I circled her as she walked gently; but in truth,

A wolf was strolling toward her, though she did not know.
