O dead one at the frontier, beside whom lie

    remains—blessed among remains!

The horses came to you, setting forth at dawn,

and stirred you, yet you did not move.

O dead one at the frontier, held captive

in the path of the wind and steady rains,

I see none but a man of generosity,

mourning in him a man of generosity.

How many burning griefs for you fill my breast,

and how many favors from you fill my hand!

No, by the life of glory and generosity,

and by pilgrimage to the House and the Sanctuary,

never, while time endures, shall I cease to mourn a king

    radiant-faced in kindness and character.

This is his bounty, filling my hand,

and praise of his compassion fills my mouth.
