O bān tree, swaying, lush with boughs,

and a garden breathing rich perfume!

God be praised for your curves, you tender bough,

and how lovely your bloom of white flowers!

I fell in love with a bewitching, languid glance

of yours, and with you, a guileless yet deceitful youth,

and an archer dwelling in Babylon,

breathing spells through his gaze, a master sorcerer.

    لَحَظتُهُ أَجرَحُهُ ثارا

    When he gazes, his glance wounds me;

I look back at him, wounding him in revenge.

So he dyes pearls carnelian-red with it,

and I turn white blossoms into yellow flowers.

A face with such marvels of beauty

    as furnish lovers with excuses.

    تَسبُكُ مِنهُ العَينُ دينارا

    Beauty has stamped upon it a silver dirham;

from it the eye casts a golden dinar.

If anyone meets, from burning passion for him,

    a wind, I have met a whirlwind.

My inmost being quivers in it like a spreading tree,

    and eyes scatter white blossoms.

His face draws all eyes around it—

a Kaaba of beauty, wherever he turns.

So, because of him, I have a Magian eye,

worshipping a fire upon his cheek.
