وَغَريبَةٍand a stranger هَشَّتgreeted gladly إِلَيَّtoward me غَريرَةٍguileless
فَوَدِدتُso I wished لَوif only نُسِجَwere woven الضِياءُthe light ظَلاماinto darkness
And a guileless stranger greeted me gladly,
so I wished that light could be woven into darkness.
طَرَأَتshe came unexpectedly عَلَيَّupon me مَعَwith المَشيبِgray hair تَشوقُنيstirring my longing
شَيخاًas an old man كَماjust as كانَتshe used to تَشوقُstir longing in غُلاماa boy
She came upon me in my gray-haired years, stirring my longing,
old as I was, just as she once stirred me as a boy.
مَقبولَةٍwelcome قَبَّلتُهاI kissed her مِنout of لَوعَةٍburning longing
نَظَراًwith a gaze يَكونُit becomes إِذاwhen اِعتَبَرتُI consider كَلاماspeech
She was welcome; I kissed her out of burning longing,
with a gaze that, when I consider it, becomes speech.
عَذَرَتshe excused me وَقَدand already أَحلَلتُهاI placed her عَنin place of نِسوَةٍwomen
كِبراًbecause of old age وَأَوسَعتُand I lavished upon الزَمانَtime سَلاماfarewell greetings
She excused me: I had given her the place of women,
in my old age, and bidden time a long farewell.
عَبِقَتshe was fragrant وَقَدand already حَنَّhad shown tenderness الرَبيعُspring عَلىtoward النَدىthe dew
كَرَماًin generosity فَأَهداهاso it sent her إِلَيَّto me سَلاماas a greeting
She was fragrant; spring had shown tenderness toward the dew,
in its generosity, and so sent her to me as a greeting.
