مِن مَوقِفٍ أَفصَحَت بيضُ السُيوفِ بِهِ
فَلاso no هَوادَةَtruce بَينَbetween السَيفِthe sword وَالعُنُقِand the neck
فَلا هَوادَةَ بَينَ السَيفِ وَالعُنُقِ
From a battlefield where gleaming white swords spoke plainly,
so there is no truce between sword and neck.

And how many Khatti spear-shafts were shattered there,
bleeding—and how many a skin of mail lay torn among them!

And how many cups of hardship passed round
to a boon companion among the heroes, taking his evening drink!
وَالخَيلُand the horses تَفريtear open جُيوبَthe collars النَقعِof the dust-cloud مِنout of حَرَبٍfury
وَالخَيلُ تَفري جُيوبَ النَقعِ مِن حَرَبٍ

تَحتَ الكُماةِ وَتُذري أَدمُعَ الفَرَقِ
And the horses tear the dust-cloud's collars in fury,
beneath armored warriors, and scatter tears of fear.

Among them a gray horse, from which the dust tore away its haze,
as the skin of night splits open to reveal daybreak;

and a black horse whose white markings silvered his lower legs,
as dawn's first light clings to the darkness;
وَأَشقَرٍand a chestnut horse سائِلٍflowing فيon وَجهِهِhis face وَضَحٌa white blaze

كَما تَصَوَّبَ نَجمُ الرَجمِ في الشَفَقِ
and a chestnut, a white blaze streaming down his face,
as a shooting star plunges through the twilight.
