How lovely the drinking companions’ gathering—a sight
where joy itself rejoices, and a solace for souls!
وَلَئِنand although كَفَفتُI have abstained عَنِfrom المُدامِwine فَإِنَّthen indeed ليI have
نَفَساًa soul تَهَشَّit rejoices بِصَدرِin the place of honor of ذاكَthat المَجلِسِthe gathering
And though I have abstained from wine, I have
a soul that brightens in that gathering’s place of honor.
لَولاwere it not for الحَياءُshame مِنَbefore المَشيبِgray hair لَقَبَّلَتit would surely have kissed
ثَغرَthe lips of الحَبابِthe wine-bubbles بِهِin it وَعَينَand the eye of النَرجِسِthe narcissus
Were it not for shame before gray hair, it would have kissed
the lips of the wine-bubbles there, and the eye of the narcissus.
