وَسَرحَةٍand a spreading tree خاضَwaded into مِنهاfrom it ظِلُّهاits shadow نَهراًa river
أَوفَتit leaned out عَلَيهِover it فَلَمyet did not تَنقُصdiminish وَلَمnor did تَزِدِincrease
And a spreading tree whose shadow waded into a river,
It leaned out over it, neither diminishing nor increasing it,
كَماjust as تَدانَيتَyou drew near مِنto ثَغرٍa mouth لِمُرتَشِفٍfor one who sips
ثُمَّthen اِنثَنَيتَyou turned back فَلَمand did not تَصدُرdepart from the water وَلَمnor did تَرِدِcome to drink
As you drew near a mouth to sip,
Then turned back, neither leaving the water nor coming to drink.
كَأَنَّas though أَفنانَهاits boughs طيباًin pleasantness حِمىthe preserve of مَلِكٍa king
أَغضىhe lowered his gaze وَأَعطىand gave فَلَمand did not يوعِدthreaten وَلَمnor did يَعِدِpromise
As though its boughs, in their sweetness, were a king's preserve—
Who lowered his gaze and gave, neither threatening nor promising.
