In remembrance of you the gulf surges, applauding,

And in your name the ring-necked doves sing.

For your sake the branch sways upon the sand dune,

And the hilltops' blossoms shine, bursting open.

That is only because your character is pure,

Stirred as well-aged wine is stirred.

    فَكُلُّكَ مَوموقُ الحُلى مُتَعَشَّقُ

    You are fine in service, in appearance, and on acquaintance;

Thus you, in all your graces, are cherished and adored.

You are the sword's finest steel; as for its watered sheen,

It is bright, while its edge is finely honed.

Does that emirate, then, know that it

Is bathed in splendor poured from your beauty?

No eye is without a thirst of ardent longing,

Though its pupil drowns in the water of your beauty.

How many a decisive utterance—pearls displayed

On a sea of parchment, or musk releasing its fragrance—

With it you split the darkness veiling the truth,

Standing in for dawn while night bows its head.

Oh, how many a night you spent upon a bed

That denies you rest, your keen mind leaving you bowed in thought.

The proud heart raises you, and at other times

Your keen understanding dives with you, and you bow your head.

You never closed your eyes, though the star had inclined before dawn,

Then it dozed as the skirts of darkness were torn apart.

Night has a green shadow that has shrunk away,

And dawn has blue water that has begun to flow.

    وَعَزمُكَ يَستَجري وَسَعدُكَ يَسبِقُ

    Your fortune prevails, and your judgment draws steel;

Your resolve urges onward, and your good fortune races ahead.

The fair one did not turn from you out of disdain,

Rather, being adored made her proud.

She kept trailing her train in haughtiness, though she

Is yet more tightly pledged and more deeply bound in your love.

Otherwise, why has the rain poured forth as tears

There, and why has thunder spent the night sobbing?

Your memory so unsettles her that it is as though

A frenzy from the touch of your love circles round her.

The wind carries you a greeting from her,

Voicing what lies beneath her ribs, giving it speech.

So woo her as a noble lady behind bridal curtains,

Whose love asks only a sip and an embrace.

Dawn buttons its shirt-front over her,

And you drink deep of water gushing within her.

The sun trails through her the train of its evening,

And you drink wine being clarified there.

So take her, a beauty—not because her lord

Has spurned her; yet many a beauty is divorced.

She dazzles; the mounts cannot tell whether a town

Is their goal there, or a glittering star.

Her breaths are fragrant, her freshness dewy,

So you think her a blossom bursting open.

Pitch camp in the abode of glory and good fortune, stringing

Upon her throat a necklace of horses, arrayed in order.

    وَأَنفِس بِهِ عِلقاً يَزينُ وَيَخنُقُ

    It constricts her breathing, yet adorns her;

What a precious treasure, adorning even as it chokes!

Is there a fragrant breeze that might set out

With dawn, or lightning gleaming and flickering,

To congratulate on my behalf the province of the East? For it

Is a shore to your sea, or a rising-place for your sun.

    فَها أَنتُما تاجٌ يَروقُ وَمَفرِقُ

    You two match in lovely appearance and inward worth;

Behold you both: a dazzling crown and the head it graces.

God be with you—an arrow whose flight is guided

By sound judgment when minds go astray.

With it he sways a branch of Himyar's nobility,

Generous in fruit and shade, rising and towering.

He turns an eye languid with modesty,

Lowering its gaze, and another that stares keenly with intelligence.

He has ambition that dictates to him, and resolve

That writes with spear-points, making bold strokes.

You find him in the thick of battle a serpent

Flicking its tongue, or broad-winged eagles circling there.

Victory's wind blows upon a firebrand within him,

Rending the reaches of battle-dust and setting them ablaze.

His speech is a sharp sword between his jaws,

His glance an arrow darting from his eyelids.

He sunders the ranks of the frenzied night whenever

A host appears, filling the expanse, and another host.

    تُباري بِكَ العيسُ المَهاري فَتَعنَقُ

    So rival the east wind, Abu Yahya, with your resolve;

Bearing you, the pale thoroughbred camels race and stride swiftly,

Witnesses to shining deeds, as though

From you a piebald steed ran at the battalion's head.

Travel beside your brother, the full moon, descending and rising

In majesty, growing dusky as it is unveiled, and shining.

Your clouds are varied, bearing torment and mercy:

One cloud brings rain, another strikes with lightning.

How could you fear the lion, roaring in assault,

Thundering, or gazing at you and flashing lightning,

When before you lies a pit opened by the straightened spear,

Terrifying, and a trench cleft by the Indian blade?

Take it, a piece of musk such as India offers in greeting,

    Perfuming the reciters' breath and spreading fragrance;

And a piece of gray ambergris bearing a waft of scent

That breathes in the heart of the assembly and is inhaled.

The enemy's soul is set aflame for it; whenever

I see this one stoked, I see that one burn.

    جَرى الحُسنُ ماءً فَوقَها يَتَرَقرَقُ

    With it I poured a white blaze across time's brow;

Beauty flowed over it like rippling water.

Riders chant it eastward and westward,

Bearing praise now to al-Sham, now to Iraq.

Suffice you verse so tender that it might almost

Be sung to withered plants and make them put forth leaves.

O great tree of lofty glory, a meadow greets you,

    Wearing spring's embroidered mantle.

It has a mouth of gleaming blossoms, its teeth spaced apart,

That enchants, and speech from the dove's cooing.

Here I am, offering you peace across the distance,

With the dewy wind, or the dream-vision that visits by night.
