What would it cost you, though your dwelling lies far away,

if that phantom came my way and paid a visit?

And I strung, from kisses along the side of his neck,

a necklace, while he wore the embrace next to his skin.

Why seek solace in my love for you, when

wasting sickness hides secrets in me, and separation in you?

And often the breeze bestowed a fragrant breath,

bedewing a liver that melts with burning heat.

And for you I questioned the night about a drowse of sleep,

until morning answered me in a whisper.

I dragged the sleeves of darkness through my night journey

at length, and tore its trailing hems as I stumbled.

And before reaching the gazelle, I trod a lion's thicket—

a jealous lion, ranging high and low in his threats.

He kindled the darkness into fire with a glance, just as

he shook the desert's regions with a roar.

So I turned a deaf ear to him, though I heard a dove,

and my eye brimmed with tears for her.

She stirred anguish as I shook my sword's blade,

so I grew tender in feeling, and it grew tender at the edge.

And I filled my eyelid with tears; and often

I had made it weep, and it streamed with surging blood.

And a brown spear, infected by me, yearned for her,

and bent its flanks for her in a swaggering sway.

And when it charmed a gray dove, you would think it an eye,

blue, whose lashes had never closed for her.

And a sleek horse walked, glorying in her, in a proud strut,

chestnut-colored: were it to flow, it would flow as pure gold.

It sets the flanks dancing with delight in him—

a coloring passed round before the eyes like wine.

Had you witnessed him, when he filled the open expanse

with galloping, and the wastes were barred to the armored warrior,

you would have seen, amid all you saw, as he appeared,

a fire that becomes a whirlwind when he runs.

I court the ears with praise of him,

in a form that courts the eyes.

And many a cloud spread a dove's wing,

while lightning had woven the darkness into day.

Gleaming, it split the darkness and watered the soil,

and this grew white with light, and that with blossoms.

in a sandy tract where Spring succeeded his son

in generosity, and made hill and lowland fertile.

The east wind stirred from it along a steady rain's night-course,

pouring heavily, beneath which the dust settled in solemn calm.

It dripped, then flowed as silver; and often

it minted a dinar in every hollow.

Upon it blue waterdrops shed full coats of mail,

blue, while the ravines unsheathed blades.

as though a battalion had been routed there,

and cast its weapons off upon it in flight.

A land where I descended into a radiant sky,

and shook down lights from the darkness there.

I shared with night travel there the memory of Abu al-Husayn,

a basil sprig for it to breathe in, richly perfumed,

and choice wine that lifted us with delight in it,

and set young men and young she-camels dancing.

A drowse of sleep played with them, and they swayed

at the joining of their chests, like trees.

And often its broad valleys flowed with it,

as rivers along the course of its streams.

O Abu al-Husayn! I have called no little man

in calling 'Abu al-Husayn'; I have called the great.

How hard for me, when you have lodged as love

between my ribs, that you should dwell so far away!

And for you I choked on a blazing tear,

like lightning striking fire within a cloud.

By your eminence, if Time would grant a night

of its span, that night would linger as dark down on Time's two cheeks.

It would sway its flanks with a tremor of gladness,

ever renewed, while joy lightened its solemnity.

Then it would scorn to wear the Pleiades as a pearl,

and deem the crescent too small to wear as a bracelet.

And perhaps Time, though harsh for a while,

will soften and bring the vizier within visiting distance.

Among my wishes—he being the sun in countenance—

is that I might be the crescent in its hidden phase.

You tower above praises with a splendid nobleman's stature,

and have worn them as robes too short for you.

It is enough that you are among a people's full moons,

who rose as moons on the very first night.

And though every wasteland keeps me from you,

at which the mirage's heart flutters in fear,

yet often young men have come by night to my abode,

noble in their fellowship in glory, and in lineage.

Noble men, swaying on the backs of noble camels,

that never stray, having themselves stood forth as beacons.

Falcons cleft the curtains of darkness with them,

keeping with them to their saddles as nests.

So a greeting traveled by night to me with the caravan,

whose buttons Glory fastened upon me.

A stirring greeting that lifted my side in pride,

until I trailed a robe across the Milky Way.

The wrong of a cruel age's reversals was annulled—

an age that shook gray hair like dust upon my cheeks.

So if I yearn, may I never forget; for

you alone are near, though your dwelling lies far away.
