May gleaming lightning blaze on your horizon,

And may a streaming downpour water your dwellings,

And may the two bear you a greeting from me,

Dewy upon the east wind's breath and fragrant.

And may the nights spare me grief for you, for they

Are ravens of parting, croaking separation.

For the distance between us has grown vast: one goes west,

Dwelling on separation's back, and one goes east.

And even if you have ceased to pine—and I do not think you forget

The generosity of brotherhood—I still yearn.

And the breeze's breath stirs me as it travels by night,

And the ash-gray doves awaken my longing for you.

So when a lightning flash appears from your sky,

Or your phantom roams by, a visitor in the night,

My ribs flutter at the thought of you, as though I had

In every rib a fluttering wing.

And I am seized by an anguish ablaze

With longing for you, and by a shimmering tear.

And even if you have gone far, your pledge is a blossom,

Dew-fresh, and your memory a fragrance to breathe in.
