بَعَيشِكَby your life هَلdo تَدريyou know أَهوجُis it the raging الجَنائِبِsouth winds
تَخُبُّtrot بِرَحليwith my saddle أَمor ظُهورُbacks النَجائِبِnoble camels
By your life, do you know: is it the raging south winds
Do you know, my life, if the raging south winds
that trot with my saddle, or the backs of noble camels?
Depart with my camel litters or the backs of howdahs?
فَماfor scarcely لُحتُI appeared فيin أولىthe first of المَشارِقِeastern horizons كَوكَباًas a star
فَأَشرَقتُand I shone حَتّىuntil جِئتُI reached أُخرىthe last of المَغارِبِwestern horizons
For scarcely had I appeared, a star at the first eastern horizon,
I rose like a star in the farthest east,
and shone, before I reached the last western horizon.
Blazing, until I reached the farthest west.
وَحيداًalone تَهادانيpass me between them الفَيافيthe deserts فَأَجتَليand so I behold
وَجوهَthe faces المَناياof deaths فيin قِناعِthe veil الغَياهِبِof deep darkness
Alone, the deserts pass me between them, and I behold
Alone, the empty deserts alarmed me, so I donned
the faces of death behind the veil of darkness.
The masks of death in the garb of the lurking places.
وَلاand no جارَneighbor إِلّاexcept مِنof حُسامٍa sharp sword مُصَمَّمٍcutting clean through
وَلاand no دارَhome إِلّاexcept فيin قُتودِsaddle-frames الرَكائِبِof riding camels
And no neighbor save a sword that cuts clean through,
I have no neighbor except one girded with a drawn sword,
and no home save upon the saddle-frames of riding camels.
No abode except the platforms of the litters.
وَلاand no أُنسَsolace إِلّاexcept أَنto أُضاحِكَexchange smiles with ساعَةًfor a while
ثُغورَmouths الأَمانيof hopes فيin وُجوهِthe faces المَطالِبِof things sought
And no solace but to exchange smiles awhile
I have no intimacy except to smile an hour
with the smiling mouths of hopes on the faces of things I seek.
At the lips of yearning in the faces of the seekers.
وَلَيلٍand many a night إِذاwhenever ماقُلتُI said قَدalready بادَhad vanished فَاِنقَضىand ended
تَكَشَّفَunveiled itself عَنto reveal وَعدٍa promise مِنَfrom الظَنِّconjecture كاذِبِfalse
And many a night, whenever I said, “It has vanished and ended,”
And a night when I say it has perished and vanished,
revealed a false promise born of conjecture.
It reveals a promise from imagining, lying.
سَحَبتُI trailed الدَياجيthe deep darkness فيهِin it سودَblack ذَوائِبٍtresses
لِأَعتَنِقَso I might embrace الآمالَhopes بيضَwhite تَرائِبِbosoms
Through it I trailed the darkness, black tresses,
I tried to enfold the darkness in black trails
to embrace hopes, white of bosom.
To embrace hopes white as mirages.
فَمَزَّقتُthen I tore open جَيبَthe collar اللَيلِof night عَنto reveal شَخصِa figure أَطلَسٍash-gray
تَطَلَّعَpeered out وَضّاحَbright-white المَضاحِكِin the smiling teeth قاطِبِfrowning
Then I tore open night's collar to reveal an ash-gray figure,
So I tore open the bosom of night for the figure of an Atlas,
that peered out, bright-toothed yet frowning.
Who looked out laughing with bright white teeth.
رَأَيتُI saw بِهِin it قِطعاًa fragment مِنَof الفَجرِdawn أَغبَشاًdusky
تَأَمَّلَgazed عَنthrough نَجمٍa star تَوَقَّدَblazed ثاقِبِpiercingly bright
In it I saw a dusky fragment of dawn,
I saw him wearing pieces of dawn dusky grey
gazing through a star that blazed with piercing light.
Looking for a star that blazed penetratingly.
وَأَرعَنَand a craggy mountain طَمّاحِhigh-reaching الذُؤابَةِin its crest باذِخٍlofty
يُطاوِلُvies in height with أَعنانَthe heights السَماءِof heaven بِغارِبِwith its summit
And a craggy mountain, its crest reaching high, lofty,
And the ambitious, aspiring, splendidly decked out hunter
vying with the heights of heaven with its summit.
Reaching with his reins to the sky's horizon.
يَسُدُّblocks مَهَبَّthe passage الريحِof the wind عَنfrom كُلِّevery وُجهَةٍdirection
وَيَزحَمُand jostles لَيلاًat night شُهبَهُits bright stars بِالمَناكِبِwith its shoulders
It blocks the wind's passage from every direction,
Blocking the breath of the wind from every direction,
and at night jostles the stars with its shoulders.
Crowding the night with his shooting stars.
وَقورٍsolemn عَلىupon ظَهرِthe back الفَلاةِof the wilderness كَأَنّهُas though it were
طِوالَthroughout اللَياليthe nights مُفكِّرٌpondering فيover العَواقِبِthe outcomes
Solemn upon the wilderness's back, as though
Serene on the back of the desert as if, throughout the nights,
all through the nights it pondered the ends of things.
He ponders consequences and results.
يَلوثُwinds عَلَيهِaround it الغَيمُthe clouds سودَblack عَمائِمٍturbans
لَهاthey have مِنfrom وَميضِthe flash البَرقِof lightning حُمرُred ذَوائِبِtrailing ends
Clouds wind black turbans around it,
The clouds soil him with black turbans
with red tassels made of lightning's flash.
That flash with the lightning's red braids.
أَصَختُI listened intently إِلَيهِto it وَهوَwhile it was أَخرَسُmute صامِتٌsilent
فَحَدَّثَنيthen it told me لَيلُthe night السُرىof night travel بِالعَجائِبِof wonders
I listened intently to it, though it was mute and silent;
I called to him and he was a silent mute,
then, during the night journey, it told me wonders.
So the night of journeying told me of wonders.
وَقالَand it said أَلاbehold كَمhow often كُنتُI have been مَلجَأَa refuge قاتِلٍfor a killer
وَمَوطِنَand a home أَوّاهٍfor a sighing supplicant تَبَتَّلَwho devoted himself to worship تائِبِrepentant
And it said, “Behold, how often I have been a killer's refuge,
It said, Oh how often I was a refuge for a killer
and the home of a sighing penitent who devoted himself to worship.
And dwelling for a repentant sinner!
وَكَمand how many مَرَّpassed بيby me مِنof مُدلِجٍa night traveler وَمُؤَوِّبٍand a daytime traveler
وَقالَand rested at noon بِظِلّيin my shade مِنof مَطِيٍّriding camels وَراكِبِand a rider
And how many night travelers and daytime travelers have passed me,
How many a sparkling one and fading one passed me by
and rested at noon in my shade, both mounts and riders.
And said, "In my shadow, rider and ridden!"
وَلاطَمَand slapped مِنof نُكبِcross-blowing gusts الرِياحِof the winds مَعاطِفيmy flanks
وَزاحَمَand jostled مِنof خُضرِgreen البِحارِseas غَوارِبيmy summits
And crosswinds have slapped my flanks,
The winds' blows slapped my cheeks
and green seas have jostled my summits.
And the green seas jostled my sands.
فَماyet not كانَit was إِلّاexcept أَنthat طَوَتهُمfolded them away يَدُthe hand الرَدىof death
وَطارَتand flew away بِهِمwith them ريحُthe wind النَوىof separation وَالنَوائِبِand calamities
Yet it came to nothing but death's hand folding them away,
Until the hand of fate carried them off
and the wind of separation and calamities sweeping them off.
And the winds of destiny and calamity blew them away.
فَماso not خَفقُthe rustling أَيكيof my groves غَيرَother than رَجفَةِa trembling أَضلُعٍof ribs
وَلاand not نَوحُthe lament وُرقيof my gray doves غَيرَother than صَرخَةِa cry نادِبِof a mourner
So my groves' rustling is nothing but the trembling of ribs,
So my fluttering was nothing but the shivering of ribs
and my gray doves' lament is nothing but a mourner's cry.
And my groaning only the cry of a wailing mourner.
وَماand not غَيَّضَdiminished السُلوانَconsolation دَمعيmy tears وَإِنَّماbut rather
نَزَفتُI exhausted دُموعيmy tears فيin فِراقِparting from الصَواحِبِcompanions
Nor has consolation dried my tears; rather,
And my tears streaming down did not dim my eyes,
I have exhausted my tears in parting from companions.
Rather, I shed my tears at parting from friends.
فَحَتّىso until مَتىwhen أَبقىshall I remain وَيَظعَنُand departs صاحِبٌa companion
أُوَدِّعُI bid farewell مِنهُfrom him راحِلاًone departing غَيرَnot آيِبِreturning
So how long shall I remain while a companion departs,
So how long will I remain while a friend departs
bidding him farewell as he leaves, never to return?
Whom I bid farewell, not to return?
وَحَتّىand until مَتىwhen أَرعىshall I watch الكَواكِبَthe stars ساهِراًsleepless
فَمِنso among them طالِعٍone rising أُخرىat the end of اللَياليthe nights وَغارِبِand one setting
And how long shall I watch the stars, sleepless,
And how long will I pasture the stars awake
some rising at night's end and others setting?
Rising at night and setting by day?
فَرُحماكَso grant Your mercy ياO مَولايَmy Lord دِعوَةَthe plea ضارِعٍof a humble supplicant
يَمُدُّwho stretches إِلىtoward نُعماكَYour bounty راحَةَthe palm راغِبِof one who longs
So have mercy, O my Lord—a humble supplicant's plea,
So, my Lord, have mercy on the plea of a beseeching suppliant
who stretches toward Your bounty the palm of one who longs.”
Who stretches his tranquility to Your favors.
فَأَسمَعَنيthus it made me hear مِنfrom وَعظِهِits admonition كُلَّevery عِبرَةٍlesson
يُتَرجِمُهاinterprets it عَنهُon its behalf لِسانُthe tongue التَجارِبِof experience
Thus, from its admonition, it made me hear every lesson
Make me hear in his preaching every lesson
that the tongue of experience interprets on its behalf.
That the tongue of experience translates from him.
فَسَلّىso it consoled بِماwith what أَبكىmade me weep وَسَرّىand soothed بِماwith what شَجاgrieved me
وَكانَand it was عَلىduring عَهدِthe time السُرىof night travel خَيرَthe best صاحِبِcompanion
So it consoled me with what made me weep, and soothed me with what grieved me,
He prayed for what made me weep and delighted in what was arduous.
and during my night journey was the best of companions.
He was, in the days of night journeying, the best companion.
وَقُلتُand I said وَقَدand already نَكَّبتُI turned aside عَنهُfrom it لِطِيَّةٍtoward a destination
سَلامٌpeace فَإِنّاfor we are مِنamong مُقيمٍone remaining وَذاهِبِand one departing
And I said, having turned aside from it toward my destination,
I said, turning away from him for a while,
“Peace! For of us, one stays and one goes.”
"Peace, for we are both dweller and traveler."
