Indeed, I have listened to your whispered confidences, O moon,

And I spent the night journeying between understanding and sight.

I behold no charms until I take in witty words,

In fair judgment between hearing and sight.

    فَقَرَّطِ السَمعَ قِرطَ الأُنسِ مِن سَمَرِ

    And I have filled my eye's black pupil with brightness;

So adorn my hearing with companionship's earring, made of nighttime talk.

So, were you to add conversation to beauty,

You would gain both beauties: of firsthand experience and of report.

And if you remain silent, the sight of you holds a lesson for me,

Which the tongues of lessons have made plain to me.

You pass, now diminished through waning, now full

Through waxing; at times ascending, at times descending.

And among people, some turn away and play, while others turn

To take heed; some are oblivious and forget, while others remember.

He plays in peoples' courtyards, which tell us—

Though those peoples have died and gone—that we follow in their wake.

So if I weep—and a close friend may weep—it is from

A grief that makes a spring of water gush from stone.
