وَيَومٍand a day صَقيلٍburnished لِلشَبابِfor youth ظَلِلتُهُI spent it
تَجُدُّdeals earnestly بِيَwith me الصَهباءُthe tawny wine فيهِin it وَأَلعَبُand I play
And a day, burnished bright for youth, I spent,
The tawny wine dealing earnestly with me that day, while I played.
رَطيبٌmoist بِأَنفاسِwith the breaths of الصِباyouth وَنَدىand the dew of الصَباthe east wind
فَقَدfor indeed رَقَّgrew delicate حَتّىuntil كادَalmost يَجريflows فَيَسكُبُthen pours forth
Moist with youth’s breaths and the east wind’s dew,
For it grew so delicate it nearly flowed and poured forth.
تَوَضَّحَshone clearly فيon وَجهِthe face of الصِباyouth مَبسِمٌa smiling mouth
وَأَشرَقَand shone فيin لَيلٍa night مِنَof الشَيبِgray hair كَوكَبُa star
A smile gleamed on the face of youth,
And a star shone in a night of gray hair.
تَقَلَّبتُI moved about فيهِin it بَينَamong أَعطافِthe folds of عيشَةٍlife
كَماjust as اِخضَرَّgrew green يَندىis dewy أَبطَحٌa pebbly valley floor ظَلَّkept يُعشِبُsprouts grass
I moved about within it amid the folds of life,
As a dewy, pebbly valley floor grew green and kept sprouting grass.
وَقَدand indeed هَزَّstirred مِنfrom عِطفَيthe two sides of نَديمٍa drinking companion وَخوطَةٍand a slender bough
أَنينُthe moaning of حَمامٍdoves أَوor غُلامٌa boy يُطَرِّبُsings delightfully
And the flanks of a drinking companion and a slender bough were stirred
By the moaning of doves or a boy singing sweetly.
وَجِزعٌand a valley bend بِأَنداءِwith the dews of الغَمامِthe clouds مُفَضَّضٌsilvered
وَذَيلٌand a train عَلَيهِover it لِلعَشِيِّof the evening مُذَهَّبُgilded
And a valley bend was silvered with the clouds’ dew,
And over it lay evening’s gilded train.
وَقَدand indeed جالَcoursed مِنfrom كَأسِthe cup of السُلافَةِchoice wine أَشقَرٌa chestnut-colored one
يُسابِقُهُraces it مِنfrom جَدوَلِthe channel of الماءِwater أَشهَبُa gray-colored one
And a chestnut steed coursed from the cup of choice wine,
A gray steed from the watercourse racing against it,
بِرَوضٍin a garden كَأَنَّas though الغُصنَthe bough يَزهىgrows proud فَيَنثَنيthen bends

In a garden, as though the bough grew proud and swayed
Within it, and as though the birds were given drink and rejoiced.
قَدِindeed اِرتَجَزَchanted rajaz verse الرَعدُthe thunder المُرِنُّresounding بِأُفقِهِat its horizon
فَأَملىso it dictated وَجالَتand moved about راحَةُthe palm of البَرقِlightning تَكتُبُwrites
The resounding thunder had chanted rajaz verse at its horizon,
So it dictated, and lightning’s palm swept about, writing.
كَأَنَّas though لِسانَthe tongue of البَرقِlightning فيهِin it عَشِيَّةًat evening
لِواءٌa banner خَضيبٌdyed أَوor رِداءٌa cloak مُذَهَّبُgilded
As though the tongue of lightning there, at evening,
Were a dyed banner or a gilded cloak.
