وَساقٍand a cupbearer لِخَيلِfor the steeds of اللَحظِthe gaze فيin شَأوِthe course of حُسنِهِhis beauty
جِماحٌbolting وَلِلصَبرِand for patience الجَميلِnoble حِرانُbalking
And a cupbearer—in the racecourse of his beauty, the steeds of the gaze
With legs for the horses of moments in the glory of his beauty
run wild, while noble patience balks.
Wings and the beautiful patience has unrest
تَرىyou see لِلصَباof youthful passion ناراًa fire بِخَدَّيهِon his two cheeks لَمdid not يَثُرrise

You see youth's fire upon his cheeks; there has not risen
You see a fire on the cheeks of youth that did not flare up
any smoke for it from the blackness of his two sideburns.
From my blackness it has two smoky cheeks
سَقاهاhe gave them drink وَقَدand already لاحَappeared الهِلالُthe crescent moon عَشِيَّةًone evening
كَماjust as اِعوَجَّbent فيin دِرعِthe armor of الكَمِيِّthe armored warrior سِنانُa spearhead
He gave them drink, as the crescent appeared one evening,
I quenched its thirst as the crescent appeared in the evening
like a spearhead bent in a warrior's armor:
As the breastplate's blade bent crookedly
عُقاراًwine نَماهاbegot her الكَرَمُnobility فَهيَso she is كَريمَةٌnoble

wine, begotten by nobility, and therefore noble;
A potion nurtured by generosity thus it is generous
and she has not lain with the son of the rain clouds, and thus is chaste.
And it did not weigh down with the son of misery thus it is a steed
وَقَدand already جالَwheeled مِنfrom جَونِthe darkness of الغَمامَةِthe cloud أَدهَمٌa black steed
لَهُfor it البَرقُlightning سَوطٌa whip وَالشَمالُand the north wind عِنانُa rein
And from the cloud's darkness a black steed wheeled,
Ash-colored clouds have wandered from the skies of clouds
with lightning for its whip and the north wind for its rein.
Lightning is its whip and north wind its rein
وَضَمَّخَand anointed رَدعُthe saffron tint of الشَمسِthe sun نَحرَthe breast of حَديقَةٍa garden
عَلَيهِupon it مِنَof الطَلِّthe dew السَقيطِfallen جُمانُpearls
And the sun's saffron tint anointed a garden's breast,
The repelling of the sun bloodied the throat of a garden
upon which lay pearls of fallen dew.
On it from pouring rain are raindrops
وَنَمَّتand divulged بِأَسرارِthe secrets of الرِياضِthe gardens خَميلَةٌa leafy grove
لَهاfor it النَورُblossoms ثَغرٌa mouth وَالنَسيمُand the breeze لِسانُa tongue
And a leafy grove divulged the gardens' secrets:
And with the secrets of gardens a beautiful one grew
blossoms were its mouth, and the breeze its tongue.
For it light is a mouth and breeze is a tongue
