وَمُقَنَّعٍand a veiled one بُخلاًout of stinginess بِنَضرَةِover the radiance of حُسنِهِhis beauty

And a veiled one, begrudging the radiance of his beauty,
became a crescent at evening, though he was a moon at its full.

I kissed the chrysanthemum of his smiling mouth,
grown delicate behind a sheath of thumam grass.
وَلَثَمتُand I kissed حُمرَةَthe redness of وَجنَةٍa cheek تَندىis dewy حَياًbashfulness
فَكَرَعتُso I drank deeply فيin بَردٍcoolness بِهاwithin it وَسَلامِand peace
And I kissed a cheek's redness, dewy with bashfulness,
so I drank my fill there of coolness and peace.
وَبِكُلِّand on every مَرقَبَةٍlookout height مَناخُa kneeling-place غَمامَةٍof a cloud

And on every lookout height a cloud had its kneeling-place,
its unceasing foam resembling frost.
رَعَدَتit thundered فَرَجَّعَتِso it echoed الرُغاءَthe camel's bellowing مَطِيَّةٌa riding-camel

It thundered—a riding-camel echoing its bellow,
knowing no flick of a rein save lightning.

There it whispered to the hills: “Give glad tidings
of thirst-quenching rain to the boughs of arak and basham.”
وَكَفىand sufficed بِلَمحِwith the flash of البَرقِlightning غَمزَةَa wink حاجِبٍof an eyebrow

And lightning's flash sufficed as an eyebrow's wink,
and that thunder's sound as an echo of speech.

On a night whose east wind grew chill, he sought warmth
there—a man of piety—at the fire of wine.

And a coal-black one, dark of hide, as though
Ham's skin had been draped over its two flanks,

with its tongue of fire ablaze, one thinks it is
lightning from which a cloud's collar has been torn.
فَكَأَنَّso it is as though بَدءَthe beginning of النارِthe fire فيat أَطرافِهِits edges

So the first flames along its edges seem
a sunset glow wrapping its hand in the hem of darkness.
